The Central Railroad Banking Company of Georgia may be placed in receivership as part of a broader plan to reorganize the Richmond Terminal system. Georgia Central is the strongest paying asset, and a receiver could jeopardize efforts to save the terminal. In a police court yesterday morning a large group of prisoners appeared on a shared charge. Sinde Oliver and Chas Brooks received the stern handling of the law for attempting to run amuck in the city on February 27. Testimony described a disorderly spree termed a burralo that ended with shots fired at various houses. Meyer Felder told them to pay 25 dollars plus costs or face sixty days of hard labor. Oliver paid the fine. Brooks’ fate remains unclear due to incomplete text.
The Polk County News reports Miss Vashti Brady of Bartow Florida died by suicide after years of epilepsy and family hardships. Born in Americus Georgia September 1868 she moved to Florida with her parents and attended the M E Church South. The article notes a sister read a condolence letter and Vashti spoke of losing their mother before proceeding to the bridge where she leapt to fatality. Body recovered and funeral planned amid community sympathy. Also covered are local court actions including administration and guardianship grants and a homecoming for Dr. J B Hinkle.
A fire at 8 o'clock yesterday morning destroyed a store and dwelling of Sica Phillips on Spring Street. Neighbors warned Phillips and his family, enabling escape with minimal injuries. Phillips carried about 1100 in insurance. fire believed incendiary. In Oglethorpe, a shooting occurred Friday night when Jesse Hawkins fired at Sam Paul, wounding him under the right shoulder. Paul sought help. Hawkins was arrested by Marshal Monk.
