New Orleans reports fertilizer sales in nine cotton states fell 16 percent in the seven months ending February from the previous year and 70 percent from two years ago, according to figures issued before the cotton market opening by Secretary Hester of the Cotton Exchange.
A steady drizzle kept many farmers away from a court house talk by W C Lasseter editor of the Progressive Farmer on the cotton pool. A score of leading growers from Sumter signed contracts or planned to join, led by R E Glenn who pledged to market all his cotton via the pool for five years. Noel McConnell of Commerce will organize Sumter county with S T Taggart moving in from Nashville to promote the plan and report on recent peach pool successes.
Deputy revenue collector L. M. Ball visits the post office to assist individuals in filing income tax returns. Returns are due by March 15 for single filers earning $1000, married filers earning $2000, and those with a loss income of $5000.
Dr George Rice Hovey secretary of the American Baptist Home Mission Society and J C Garry Grant chairman on education will arrive in Americas Sunday and address the evening service at Bethseda church. They visit the Americas Institute to inspect the negro Baptist school and discuss educational methods used there amid growing local interest.
Henry Harvey and Bennie DeVane were released on $5,000 bonds after a preliminary hearing in Ellaville. The charges were reduced from murder to assault with intent to murder. Witnesses described the shooting at Will Jones’s home and the lynching victim’s post mortem, while DeVane and Harvey left with support from Sheriff Battle and others. Benny DeVane admitted presence at the scene but denied firing. Harvey proved a weak witness for the state.
Washington March 4 President Harding finished his first year in office in good health but his personal physician Brig. Gen. Charles B. Sawyer warns he works too hard and plays too little. Sawyer urges more outdoor activity and balance between work and rest to preserve the president’s vigor.
The second Americus curb market opened Saturday despite cold, wind, rain and muddy roads. About a dozen farmers offered produce while housewives, many with baskets, bought heavily for weekend dinners. Beets and carrots sold out or not yet available, and Mrs. George Van Riper urged farmers to bring a variety of goods rain or shine, as shopper demand grows.
March 3 report says the committee of national defense overthrew President Zanella's provisional government after fierce clashes. The committee, now in power, asked Italy to send a representative to run Fiume until order returns. Rome noted the crisis deepened as Fascists Legionnaires and Republicans controlled the city since yesterday.
Washington March 4 The House Military Affairs Committee chairman Kahn urged creation of a national commission to resolve existing Muscle Shoals government contracts and to negotiate sale or lease of the properties The proposed commission would include the secretaries of war agriculture and treasury and would aim to ensure nitrate production for war purposes and the nation’s needs.

Atlanta March 4 A O Blalock long-time Georgia internal revenue collector announces his candidacy for commissioner of agriculture to succeed J J Brown. He cites strong administration of revenue duties during wartime and notes his independence from Governor Hardwick in pursuing the race.
