In Washington on March 2 the Senate, after an executive session, approved the conference report on the appropriation bill. The Senate then referred a concurrent resolution from the Post Office committee to investigate the Lake City postmaster murder and family killings, with a six member joint committee authorized to compel testimony and use subpoenas. The United States court of inquiry into the loss of the battleship Maine resumed sessions at 10 AM. Ten more enlisted men were examined. Commander Forsyth testified about coaling at the navy yard. The torpedo boat Ericsson carried mail to the fleet at Tortugas and was due back this afternoon. The scene in Key West remained unchanged with rumors of an upcoming naval move. Admiral Sicard said no movement occurred that day and ships keep steam up.
The second day of the U S court of inquiry into the USS Maine loss opened in Key West with officers recalled for possible re exposure and cadets on hand.
