Tragic Drowning Of Gene Eldridge At Local Pond
Gene Eldridge, a twelve year old Negro boy, drowned while swimming at a pond near Barlow's mill. A crowd of boys watched as the heavy plank drifted into deep water and Eldridge disappeared after crying for help. Comrades failed to save him. searchers recovered the body about a half hour later. The boy was well known in the colored community and by whites in the area.

Third party meeting in Sumter shows little activity
Yesterday a Blue Fred Wimberley third party assembly was held in Sumter County with about a 25 vote majority claimed. McNeal, named chairman at Wimberley’s meeting last week, aided in organizing yesterday’s gathering. The event produced no real action or influence on politics. A countryman in Americus reported a driver selling produce on Cotton Avenue and a young negro persuaded him to let him sell. the driver vanished, police on the lookout.
