Rooks Interview Probed After Assault Sentence

A Sumter man named B J Rooks faces eight months in the chain gang or a $500 fine after an assault case. Reporters found him disjointed and evasive during a jail interview, saying he might be ill or unsettled. He claimed to be sick, refused to pay the fine, and suggested money from others might cover it as he blamed “they” for pressing the matter.

Murderer Warren Crawford Caught After Manhunt

Warren Crawford, a Black man described as a colored suspect, was arrested by Amattene police after a warrant pursued him for the murder of Nathan Mercer, a white citizen of Worth. The chase spanned Albany and Americus, ending when Crawford was found asleep in a bed and surrendered to officers. He confessed to guilt during transport to Albany on Saturday.

Contract Let for Americus Gas Works and Begin Soon

The contract for erection of Americus new gas works was let in Baltimore with Kerr Manufacturing Company to supply and install the plant. President A B Harrold signed for the company and assurances were given that work will proceed with minimal delay. The plant aims to handle 100000 feet of gas per day and promises high quality gas for local use. The report notes the drought’s effects on farmers improving in several counties as crops recover and vegetation prospers after April and May dryness.
