First Oregon Regiment and Signal Corps Sail For Home From Philippines

After twelve months in the Philippine Islands the First Oregon Regiment and Volunteer Signal Corps sailed for San Francisco aboard the Newport and Ohio. In active combat near Zapote River Fourteenth Infantry crossed trenches under heavy fire, routing insurgents and taking prisoners. Sixty five enemy dead found in trenches. Oregon units suffered 62 killed and 28 died of disease during the year. Troops cheered as transports departed Manila harbor.

Smallpox at Hamburg on Verge of General Epidemic

Governor McSweeney received a letter from Magistrate Gotesen of Hamburg stating the county is near a general smallpox outbreak. Degrees with smallpox are reported in Aién county, with only Augusta providing aid. the state board was asked to fund action, the governor referred the matter to the state board chairman for action.

Tharteston Car Line Sued for Damages

Two damage suits totaling 30000 dollars were filed in the court of common pleas against Charleston Consolidated Baling Gne and Buetic Company. Plaintiffs include Doug Vans ning, an employee, injured for the company Palms in October last year, and John Leonard seeking 15000 dollars for the loss of four fingers and part of his right hand.

Nebraska cyclone kills eight people in Bran Neb

A violent cyclone struck Herman Neb ten miles north of Bran last night. The storm formed at 6:15 PM and tore through the town in minutes, leveling buildings and damaging the bank owned by J. H. Chambers. Eight are reported dead and about fifty wounded as two trains brought in casualties for care at the Clifton hotel.
