The storm damaged Wesleyan University facilities, and other towns reported extensive wreckage with trees blocking tracks and roundhouses demolished. Roosevelt visited West Point. Arthur Lynch arrested in London on arrival from Dieppe.
A south bound passenger train from Atlanta collided head on with a freight train on a sharp curve near Juliette Georgia at 2 10 yesterday afternoon. The engineer and fireman of the passenger train were killed instantly and over a score of passengers were injured many seriously. Freight crew escaped by jumping. Engineer Gatley said his watch was five minutes slow and he believed the passenger train was behind time, though it was on time.
Harry Friedman dubbed King of the Moonshiners and two women were arrested for alleged complicity in an illicit Yonkers distillery case recently uncovered by firemen. Friedman, said to be wealthy, faced $2,500 bail with examination set for next Tuesday. Secret Service says he paid a former government employee to avoid arrest and another agent for protection. His family reportedly travels in Europe.
Sidi Ali, Bey of Tunis, died this morning in Tunis. He succeeded his brother Mohamedee-Sadok on Oct. 27, 1882. The deceased ruler is survived by his son Mohamed, born in 1865, continuing the reign of the Tunisian royal line since 1692.
A Chicago fire at the Saint Luke Society sanitarium on Wabash Avenue and Twenty‑first Street killed several patients including those with delirium tremens and drug delirium. The blaze, starting in the basement, spread via the elevator shaft, trapping many on upper floors and prompting 60 patients to be moved as others jumped to the pavement. Coroner Trager promised a full investigation as the death toll rose and 34 injured remained under care with three more expected to die.
