June 1 Cleveland Electric Company workers strike resumes as the first downtown car is guarded by imported deputies. Rioters throw stones and vegetables, ropes are cut, cars halted within feet. Police clash with crowds, several rioters arrested while negotiators wait for company representative.
Moytcomery Alabama June 13 An effort to frame governor appointed trustees for Auburn Agricultural and Mechanical College as a pretext to remove President Browne and some professors has failed. No faculty vacancies are expected this year as terms run through the year and the board shows no vote against Browne. Also noting a mistrial in Mrs M A Hughes murder case in South Carolina with jurors deadlocked between acquittal and manslaughter.
Reformers and party leaders push the trust question to top billing in 1900 with many favoring free silver alongside imperialism and expansion. Clark Howell Jr of Georgia and other elites weigh Cuba Porto Rico and the Philippines while hints point to a Bryan renomination in Chicago.
Paris June 12 The prefect M Blanc orders inquiry into police brutality after Socialist protests at Pavilion d Armenonville. Premier Dupuy says police acted to maintain order and credits them for public safety as ministers quit amid intense crowd reaction. The chamber backed the government stance 321 to 173 and adjourned.
The US district court grand jury in Alaska accuses wasteful spending of 415000 allocated for education between 1884 and 1897. It cites misused funds from the Office of Education and calls for Interior Department action to reform Alaska schooling.
President orders explanation from Professor Louis Haupt of the fathmian canal commission after an interview alleging the commission’s project was a sham. If Haupt denies the interview, he may be recalled from the commission. if he stands by it, he must resign to preserve the commission’s usefulness.
A severed body segment was recovered from the East River near Forty second Street after being found drifting two miles from the prior site. The upper portions show partial decapitation and missing right arm with the left intact, while authorities search for the rest of the remains. A later portion was found in Erie Basin, Brooklyn, as part of ongoing unidentified body investigations.
