Danville and Americus landmarks in Sumter County heritage
In a Sumter County reminiscence, the author recalls Danville as a vanished village once thriving on the bluff near the river, with the last brick building remaining as a memory. It notes the first steamboat built in 1840 at Butts Landing, its failed voyage, and how river traffic spurred growth before railroads shifted fortunes. The piece also recalls Americus brick beginnings, deer-hunt lore, and the iconic hotel site, reflecting on lost landmarks and the lasting memory of history.
