Fire destroys barn on Hansford farm near Americus
A Sunday night blaze totally destroyed a barn on W. R. Hansford’s farm off the Smithville road near Americus. The fire was visible from Americus and drew spectators by car. The barn was on a negro tenant farm within the Hansford plantation. cause not yet determined. The farm sits on a detour road used during paving on the Plains Highway linking the Plains and Smithville roads.

Fire damages Saliba store. $25 estimate in water damage
An early morning fire at Mitchell Saliba’s store caused about $25 in damage, all water related. The origin was unknown, beneath a stairway between the Salita Store and the New York restaurant. The building belonged to W. E. Mitchell and was not insured. The fire was detected by a passer-by who alerted the fire department. Smoke filled the store as firefighters used water, causing additional damage to stock.
