A promotional notice urges shoppers to compare prices at The Parlor Grocery run by E. D. Ansley. It promises freshly stocked goods from French specialties to daily staples with bargains on meal flour sugar and coffee. It touts savings over a month of living high at a low cost and advertises bulk T in 5 lb caddies at 40c per pound.
Receivers propose $100 certificates to liquidate payroll claims with 7 percent interest and five year lien on railroad property but many employees balk as they must cover shortfalls to obtain the paper notes. Some have sold claims at a discount. others await Northern markets for cash repayment. A court ruling concerning insurers and a separate note on a gift to the Americas Club are also reported.
The Americus Light Infantry plans a one week trip to Cumberland Island for an encampment while barred from the Georgia state camp at Griffin. If enough members pledge, about thirty names are sought to justify the excursion with reduced railroad rates and shared community turnout. Also notes cost estimates for a ten day Chicago World's Fair trip and a successful Tombigbee cotton mills report showing $26,000 net profit and plans to reinvest.
Beresford, a notorious figure in West Virginia courts, was sent to a convict camp of the Gross Lumber Company on the S A M road yesterday to serve a six year forgery sentence. He is described as lazy and unlikely to have endured hard labor, with a likely job checking lumber at the villa in Wilcox county if he behaves.
Captain P Montgomery of the Mississippi penitentiary recaptured Brooks Storey, who escaped custody and fled toward Montgomery. Storey was secured to a mule and transported back to the penitentiary. Authorities report a reward of 250 dollars plus expenses will be netted by arresting officers. Storey had prior addresses in Florida and Mississippi and was known for deception. A separate item notes the Buddenburg Furniture Company in Little Rock, Arkansas failing with liabilities around 200,000 dollars and assets about 50,000.
In Atlanta on May 31 the State reopens the second trial of Porter Stocks for the Cassin killing. Two witnesses testified, including Nim Baird who contradicts Stocks’ account and indicates a prior quarrel before the shooting. The case follows a prior guilty verdict with no mercy recommendation, amid many missing or dead witnesses. Separately, Rev. Robert B. Leater, veteran Methodist minister, dies at 69 in Milledgeville and is buried in Oak Grove. Joseph Pettyjohn, Arlington hotel founder, dies after being shot in Hamburg and is buried in Augusta after services.
A special to the Age-Herald from Opelika reports Pink Haley, son of a prominent citizen in Binwinonam Alabama, on a spree fatally shooting a colored courtesan named Caught Greenlee and then shooting himself. The woman is expected to die.
