Democratic Rally at Ellaville Draws Large Crowd and Barbecue

Citizens from Schley, Sumter, Marion and Macon counties gathered for a Democratic rally in Ellaville. Speakers J O Niles Col E F Hinton and Col R L Berner argued for democracy and tariff reform while detailing the perils of third parties. A grand barbecue fed about 2000 attendees as plans for party unity and discussion of national banking and free silver dominated the program.

World's Fair appropriation vote and five dollar amendment

July 27 Wasuixotox notes the World’s Fair appropriation passing after speeches for and against. The House rejected Senate minor amendments and defeated Mr Bankhead Alabama’s plan to erase word million making the sum five dollars by 77 to 141, narrowing support for the million appropriation.

Colored Alliance in session at Americus condemns Gilmore

The Georgia colored alliance met in Americus with about 9000 farmers represented mostly by proxy. It condemned Gilmore for casting eleven votes at the St Louis meeting and warned he must return papers or face legal action. Richardson led discussions denying politics as the alliance's aim and noted few members lean toward the third party.

Day Wins. Dawson Defeats Americus In Southern League Play

Dawson beat Americus by 10 to 1 in a close, well attended game at Farlow lawn. The article lists players from the Dawson and Americus sides and notes Cordele will play here next Tuesday. Americus Wins Three Prizes At Colored Firemen's Tournament

In Americus about 5000 visitors attended a colored firemen's tournament praised for order and enjoyment. Chief Lamar and officers reported an orderly crowd and few drunks. Dudley No. 3 of Americus won the regular reel race with 22 seconds, while Defiance No. 2 of Cuthbert and Vigilance No. 2 of Americus also placed high. Americus earned three of four prizes and hosted a lively dance as part of the event.
