ANOTHER BIG STRIKE WARNING ON AUGUST 1

Secretary Patrick McBryde of the United Mine Workers says a wage advance demand in Pittsburg by August 1 could trigger a national suspension. He reports letters from several places seeking a general strike and foresees Ohio Indiana and Pennsylvania actions spreading if concessions are denied. He notes Indiana miners are already out and warns state officials may order a nationwide work stoppage if a broad strike is called.

Lew Wallace Pens Book From Kidnapping Tale

Lew Wallace author of Ben Hur works on a new book drawn from the life of Charles Lispenard who was kidnapped from New York in 1861 and brought to Indiana. At age nine he escaped, was pursued, and rescued as a storm forced four men to seek shelter in a barn. Allen and a nephew were convicted of attempted murder and imprisoned. Lispenard later became a wealthy contractor and found his mother in Brooklyn.

Reading to Reorganize Plan Faces Foreclosure Threat

Pomaveventa July 24 The Press outlines a Reading railroad reorganization effort by the Eirle Oluott committee and a New York sub committee. The plan seeks to value first second and third mortgage bonds and Reading stock around 25 million dollars and collect via foreclosing the general mortgage. It is the third proposed plan since the company went into receivership, following Morgan Drexel Welsh and Earl Olcott efforts that failed to gain cooperation.

Manzanillo Reports Spanish Victory and Casualties

Dispatches from Havana dated July 22 say Manzanillo residents honor a captain and celebrate a victory in Santiago de Cuba province. With 1,200 troops, the forces defeated 6,000 insurgents, leaving 600 dead and wounded and 150 dead horses. Antonio Ruiz Perdomo and Manuel Vargas, American citizens, departed Cuba for New York aboard the Habana. The Spanish torpedo boat Martin Pinzon arrived at Gibara from Spain.

Who will succeed Blackburn stirs Kentucky senate race

Sovereign's Boycott Causes Payment Refusal in Alabama

In Binwincham Alabama on July 29 a hired worker refused $15 in national bank notes to pay a post office bill, accepting other money after Assistant Postmaster Cruikshank offered it. The act followed General Master Workman Sovereign's boycott order against national bank notes and was the first such enforcement in the area, treated as an absurd move by workers. An unrelated note reports an accident at a gun trial at Bonvines where a charge exploded, wounding Lieutenant Esp, killing one sailor, and injuring Admiral Chathanminois and others. several sailors were lightly hurt. Also, McKay & Co brick plant at Pitapetrata, July 24, was partly insured.

Four men halted the Buffalo to Chicago express at Reece’s switch, four miles west of Archbold, fired shots, forced the messenger out, and looted the local safe and big safe. About $150 reportedly taken. dynamite proof safes had been installed since Kendalville robbery.
