Secretary Patrick McBryde of the United Mine Workers says a wage advance demand in Pittsburg by August 1 could trigger a national suspension. He reports letters from several places seeking a general strike and foresees Ohio Indiana and Pennsylvania actions spreading if concessions are denied. He notes Indiana miners are already out and warns state officials may order a nationwide work stoppage if a broad strike is called.
Lew Wallace author of Ben Hur works on a new book drawn from the life of Charles Lispenard who was kidnapped from New York in 1861 and brought to Indiana. At age nine he escaped, was pursued, and rescued as a storm forced four men to seek shelter in a barn. Allen and a nephew were convicted of attempted murder and imprisoned. Lispenard later became a wealthy contractor and found his mother in Brooklyn.
Pomaveventa July 24 The Press outlines a Reading railroad reorganization effort by the Eirle Oluott committee and a New York sub committee. The plan seeks to value first second and third mortgage bonds and Reading stock around 25 million dollars and collect via foreclosing the general mortgage. It is the third proposed plan since the company went into receivership, following Morgan Drexel Welsh and Earl Olcott efforts that failed to gain cooperation.
The Spalding County Silver League gathered delegates from over 100 counties in Griffin on July 18 to hear Senator John T. Morgan of Alabama speak. Pat Walsh presided as permanent chairman, with resolutions backing bimetallism adopted unanimously. The event drew prominent Democrats and aimed to advance the silver movement across Georgia.
Newfoundland July 24 The Union bank directors were arrested but admitted to bail at 36,000 each. The Telegram attacks the directors of both banks over private accounts and delays in justice. Also notes Consul Dobellett reports a vapor-based fruit preservation process from Rio Temo for extending fruit life. Also mentions Fitzsimmons training quarters in Galveston and naval academy cadet appointments with names and places.
Dispatches from Havana dated July 22 say Manzanillo residents honor a captain and celebrate a victory in Santiago de Cuba province. With 1,200 troops, the forces defeated 6,000 insurgents, leaving 600 dead and wounded and 150 dead horses. Antonio Ruiz Perdomo and Manuel Vargas, American citizens, departed Cuba for New York aboard the Habana. The Spanish torpedo boat Martin Pinzon arrived at Gibara from Spain.
Frayxvont Kentucky July 22 The issue in the state election centers on who will replace Blackburn in the United States senate. Senator Blackburn General Simon Boliver Buckner and Congressman James Bennett McCreary tour counties to advocate their claims in person, a dramatic custom here. Blackburn and his supporters grow discouraged as nominations lag, while Blackburn says Louisville convention did not defeat silver and will back the ticket and push the fight to the end on his policy.
An unknown man likely named Frank Rogers, found dead by his own hand, left a vest pocket memo questioning the sin of suicide and fate. A later page bore Morse code reading My name is Mud. The man’s home appears traced to New York.
In Binwincham Alabama on July 29 a hired worker refused $15 in national bank notes to pay a post office bill, accepting other money after Assistant Postmaster Cruikshank offered it. The act followed General Master Workman Sovereign's boycott order against national bank notes and was the first such enforcement in the area, treated as an absurd move by workers. An unrelated note reports an accident at a gun trial at Bonvines where a charge exploded, wounding Lieutenant Esp, killing one sailor, and injuring Admiral Chathanminois and others. several sailors were lightly hurt. Also, McKay & Co brick plant at Pitapetrata, July 24, was partly insured.
A Associated Press interview with R H Haury editor of The tion in Minnappi indicates ex-Senator McLaurin will be the Democratic nominee for governor. He is described as a strong free coinage advocate and opposes the single standard. Other candidates for United States House and state offices are noted as split between free silver and gold positions with silver favored in the legislature.
