Mortimer H. King confessed to killing Major Samuel H. McLeary of the coast artillery corps on July 2 near Cheraw South Carolina. The body, mangled and skeletonized, was found 11 miles north of Cheraw by a searching party. King was brought to the Cheraw area as the manhunt continued for his unidentified partner.
