A Belgian court martial sentenced three Germans to death for sabotage at Aix la Chapelle. Count Von Keller is among the condemned, with Dudwig and Kingender also slated for execution. Lorbeer received life imprisonment. exact execution date not announced.
Americas and Sumter County Chamber of Commerce directors met Friday with Lovelace Eve as president and other officers present. Secretary’s report showed 1250 freight bills checked since last meeting and overcharge claims filed, saving the county $331.70 per month averaging to June 1 totaling $1,658.50. Continued on Page 7.
July 14 Americus bats had their hitting clothes on and annexed thirteen safeties off Hollingsworth to beat Blakely 9 to 5. Paul and Laird pitched for the visitors and held Blakely to four singles. A double-header is set for today at the playground starting at 3 o clock to finish before dark.
Greenville S C July 14 A J Thompson of Milan Ga traveling salesman for Lynchburg Sign Co Lynchburg Va was found dead in his downtown hotel room after two days locked. Doctors say he died probably two nights earlier from acute heart failure.
Governor Walker announced the re appointment of R E Burger as judge of the county court of Oconee county and Miles Lewis as solicitor of the Civil Court of Greensboro. Nominations were sent to the senate on Monday. Mr and Mrs S M Yopp and two children arrived from Marion Friday to spend several days with Mr and Mrs R L Crawford at their home on Forrest street.
Secretary Edwin Denby of the Navy Department announced definite actions toward honoring the naval limitation treaty. All signatories have ratified the agreement, with France last to assent. A naval council meeting was called to plan scrapping battleships to be abandoned under the convention terms.
A July fire in Burke Idaho and nearby Mace destroyed the business district and most homes, leaving about a thousand people homeless. Origin of the blaze is under investigation as winds fanned the flames and swept through Burke seven miles east of Made mining centers. No deaths reported by midnight, with damages estimated around 1.5 million dollars.
Jenee B. Sweet of Bluefields Virginia was found dead at the bottom of an airshaft in the Bellevue-Stratford hotel Philadelphia. He was president of the National Lumber company and a struggle over finances is suspected. His skull was crushed in a five story fall and death was likely instantaneous. Papers found in his room indicate ongoing financial difficulties.
T G Beavers purchased the T L Carruthers homestead on the Dixie highway east of Americus for 12000 dollars. The 65 acre property, formerly the Clark home, is set to become an up to date dairy farm and show place as Beavers and his sister Miss Maude Beavers along with Mr and Mrs Henry Williams occupy it.
McRae Georgia July 14 Commissioner J C Thrasher has locked the books and records of the Telfair County commissioners office and blocks an audit ordered by the February term of the Superior Court The auditors departed unable to access the books and an order from Judge Eschel Graham to surrender records for auditing has had no effect He must appear in court at the next session and show cause why contempt of court should not be charged.
Bobby Hooks the Americus youth and son of Mr and Mrs T B Hooks won events four five and six at the Macon Junior Chamber of Commerce aquatic meet yesterday. He competed against many expert swimmers from across Georgia and is receiving warm congratulations from friends here on his swimming ability.
Columbus Elks were well represented at the Bo Pp. O. E. reunion in Atlanta this week. Eight members traveled by automobile while six others rode two special Pullman cars. The cars formed part of Pullman City in the railroad yards near the capital during convention week.
A dispute over mosquito control at the Americus Golf Club surfaces as Dr. J W Chambliss of the County Board of Health seeks abatement of a nuisance. The contention centers on sewer water from Dr Peter F Bahnsens dairy property polluting a stream on club land, breeding mosquitoes and possibly malaria. Golf club officials say they have attempted to stop the source. Bahnsen has not replied. A legal remedy is hinted if co operation fails.
Governor Clifford Walker said he was well pleased with the progress of his tax reform program as Georgia enters the second week of the General Assembly. The House Ways and Means reported against repealing the tax equalization act but a two day floor fight ended in a 120 to 64 vote favoring abolition. Walker urged cooperation and predicted reforms would be enacted, noting that over half of Georgia property is exempt from taxation.
Betram Naylor former chief of the Americas fire department is recovering from an eye injury suffered several days ago at Shiver's mill. The sight in the eye may be impaired though he is improving.
Dr Edwin DeBarr a Klan official and Oklahoma educator told a large Macon crowd at city hall that the Ku Klux Klan is not anti anything and condemned mob violence and jury shirking. He outlined the Klan creed stressing law enforcement white supremacy and Protestant church ties. Women made up about a third of the audience as he spoke on women's rights and chastity.
Georgia National Guard adds Rev. James G. Patton Jr. as chaplain at summer camp in St Simons standing in for Chaplain James A. Moore who retired to National Guard Reserves. Patton is from Lawrenceville and appointed by Col. L. C. Pope to fill the vacancy.
In Michigan’s down river district, federal agents with treasury aides seized 200 boats at Ecorse Wyandotte and Trenton for equipment violations. An angry mob protested, attempting to dynamite a bridge and obstruct the seizures as officers had to fight off attackers while sealing the vessels and denying use until owners explain noncompliance.
Six inmates escaped from Pennsylvania Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia after beating a guard, scaling a wall, and forcing a motor truck to haul them toward Fairmount Park. Officials say all escapees were armed.
Atlanta July 14 Representative Wimberly proposed a constitutional amendment cutting the senate to twelve and the house to forty six. Each of the eight most populous counties would get one house seat, other counties allocated by population. Passage by both houses and a voter referendum required. The eight counties named Fulton Chatham Richmond Bibb Floyd Muscogee Laurens De Kalb.
Governor Walker announced an extra session of the Georgia legislature to be called shortly after November 18 1924 if the current session repeals the tax equalization law and enacts constitutional tax reform measures to be voted on by the people. If approved, the new system would be enacted via a constitutional amendment and placed into effect after the general election with the extra session to align results. Walter Duncan of South Carolina met with Governor Wesker on tax classification and income tax as lawmakers Lankford and Elders push reform bills.
Robbery darkens Ve Hege street when an unlocked drawer yields a hoard of jewelry valued over a thousand dollars. Items include a diamond ring, opal blue ring, pink cameo pin, bar pins, and a Kappa Alpha pin with rubies and pearls. Police hunt the thief as Mrs. Gott shopped.
Fulton Harden, a 21 or 22 year old white man from Columbus Ga, was found dead on Seaboard tracks about half a mile east of Helena. Officials believe he may have thrown himself in front of a fast train from Savannah due to intent of self harm. A note on his person gave his Columbus home and stated he was bound for Hinesville.
