In Savannah Americus and Montgomery, court proceedings with Receivers Hawkins and Hamilton unfold over two days. Claims allege misallocation of bond interest and improvements to debt payments, with testimony of General Accountant S C Cooper alleging book manipulation. Sperry disputes Hawkins statements, while hearings continue amid a crowd of creditors.
Citizens of Americus gathered at city hall to consider buying the street railroad. A proposed $2,500 private subscription would buy the line, resume operations for two years, and secure a double-bond guarantee if used early. The company would also sponsor annual excursions for at least 1,000 riders from northern and western cities.
Georgia railroads win local freight rate increases after two months of hearings. The commission approves 15 percent on trunk lines, 30 percent on branches, and up to 50 percent for several lines, while lumber naval stores cotton meat and corn remain unchanged. The Western and Atlantic declines any increase. A new Bailey and Campbell shop and hat firm opens September first on Jackson Street, Americas, with Liston Cooper joining the firm.
A 21 year old Col colored man, Columbus Perry, was severely wounded when a shotgun discharged accidentally while in the hands of a colored youth named Cato. Perry, living near the city, has been brought for care. doctors fear he may not survive. The incident occurred at Sim Slson's place, six miles north of town. In a separate note, the Americus Furniture Company property was sold at receiver's sale with bids of 310,000 and 15,000, to Messrs Stewart & Co., wiping out stock and signaling new management.
Judge Fink in chambers yesterday confirmed Thornton Wheatley as permanent receiver of the Bank of Americas. Crowds pondered an outside appointee, but Wheatley’s fitness and stockholder interest won out. He will hire an expert accountant to probe the bank’s affairs and safeguard stockholders as assets are maximized and debts paid.
Judge Hudson permanently enjoins opening a liquor dispensary under the state law and rules the law unconstitutional. An appeal to the supreme court will be filed, leaving affairs in statu quo. Also noted is Sumter farmer J M Bird visiting the city to sell corn, with a strong crop outlook and ample provisions.
Mr J R McNeal a well known Sumter County citizen died at his home six miles east of the city on Saturday afternoon following a several weeks illness He was in his 67th year The funeral will be held at Salem church burying ground at 11 o clock this morning.
A devastating blaze at a World’s Fair cold storage warehouse near Sixty Fourth Street towers and flames trap and crush dozens of firemen on the roof below. Fire Marshal Murray cites fourteen dead among first responders. many workers and guards perished. The fire destroyed a 130 by 255 foot wooden building with a 200 foot masaya tower and an artificial ice rink. Crowd of 20 000 to 30 000 looked on as panic broke out with injuries and unconfirmed reports of women killed. In another town, a cyclone in Pomeroy Iowa wrecked homes, killed 56, wounded many, with $500 000 loss. Governor Boles aiding relief.
