On or about July 5th the stock of Dry Goods Clothing Shoes Hats and Gents Furnishings will be moved to the Americus Jewelry Company building at 421 Jackson Street. Clearout sale to clear unsold stock with inducements and low prices as the seller prefers to move goods.
A local ad lists a wide range of fabrics including standard Satins, French Muslin, Matiste, Percales, and Ginghams priced per yard from 4 to 12 cents. It highlights entire stock reductions on Cortette, POK, and various dress fabrics. All goods cash only, no charge for old stock.
Local shop announces mass sale of linen cuffs neckwear and shirts to clear stock before moving to a new location. Dozen packages of 5 ply linen collars sold at 1.50 per dozen, neckwear including stock ties and band bows heavily discounted, large lot of 303 neckwear at 25 cents, several lots of negiligee and white shirts offered at sacrifice. Fine white dimity shirts on sale at 1.00 each.
The store advertises a clearance of Crash Suiting regardless of value and promises a full line of Cassimere Worsted Suite and Blue Serges at greatly reduced prices. Attorney General W Taylor appears set to be the nominee with Deboe backing. Stone and Pratt factions talk of concessions while Deboe Taylor maintain disciplined organization. Belligerent black voters and minor place concessions figure in ongoing maneuvering.
Two witnesses in Charleston rate cases testified before the Interstate Commerce Commission. B I Newbury of Old Dominion Steamship and John A Smith of the Charleston Bureau of Freight described through rates by rail and sea. Smith detailed local discrimination claims by Charleston against Virginian gateways and cited higher Chicago to Charleston rates than from Chicago to farther points.
Secretary Alger rejects retirement rumors saying he will not retire this year and health and private business will guide his future. He complains of baseless attacks and notes he plans an upcoming trip to Long Branch with Vice President Hobart.
On Broad Street at noon Mrs Lillian Paff and her husband George Paff clashed as he ran across the street and gripped her neck. A second choking attempt followed until two policemen intervened. They were arrested and held at the station. Mrs Paff was later released on bond. Mrs Paff is from Newberry and formerly used the surname Livingston. Puff is described as a former policeman.
Georgia has men named by the president for regular army service at Manila and other stations. Captain Walter Corbett of Macon, Captain Frank Crenshaw of Barnesville, Lieutenant Longstreet of Gainesville lead a group of five Georgians chosen for duty. Other items mention a mill discharge, a fatal accident at Piedmont cotton mill, and migrations and requisitions in the region.
General Leonard Wood orders absolute quarantine in the Santiago department. Only department personnel may enter the city while others are barred. Fever patients are cared for by Major Carr and surgeons Mendosa and Nunez, with hotels and saloons closed to Americans and arrests for intoxication or loitering. Headquarters move to Cristo and rail and steam lines barred from bringing Americans to the city. No ships may dock. supplies to Morro Castle troops will come via road depot. Five days detention for travelers before leaving camp.
Inquiry at the state department seeks the location of John Paul Jones American naval hero who died in Paris in 1782. Henry Vignaud reports no known grave site yet. He notes Jones was not buried with Lafayette remains and suggests a rented grave may have ended in the potter's field.
A leading ship-broking firm offered to purchase the Reina Mercedes and other captured vessels, prompting suspicion Spain seeks to regain them to defend pride. Navy refused sale, saying repairs would cost at least 500000 dollars and leave the ship outdated for modern use.
King Oscar expressed joy at the first step toward friendly rapprochement between two great European powers. He noted the exchange of telegrams between Emperor William and President Loubet and praised the gesture on territory of Sweden and Norway. Oscar sent similar congratulations through the Sweden and Norway legation in Paris.
