Rotary Day Feeds 350 With Quota of Chickens and Cakes

Rotary plans an all-day event with guests from Albany West Point Quitman Thomasville Columbus and Moultrie. Each Rotary family must supply two chickens one cake 12 deviled eggs 12 biscuits and a white table cloth. Baskets to be delivered to the playground by 11 a.m. Thursday under the menu committee led by W. E. Taylor and Mrs. L. F. Grubbs chairing the basket group.

France Opposes Immediate Allied Parley On Reparations

Paris, July 11. France will keep its experts at The Hague through the conference on Russian affairs and will not consent to an early Allied meeting on reparations. A final step meeting may be considered, after discussions between President Dubois of the reparations commission and Premier Poincare.

Anti-Fee Lawmakers Plan Assembly Program

Georgia lawmakers from Fulton Chatham Richmond Bibb and Muscogee and other large counties met at the Kimball House in Atlanta to discuss abolishing county officer fees. The gathering aimed to devise a plan acceptable to counties seeking to end the fee system amid noted agitation over large official fees.

Summer Short Course at Second Aggie Opens July 24

In Tifton on July 11 the annual Summer Short Course at the Second District A. and M. school will run Monday night July 24 through Friday. Daily lectures cover cattle dairying hogs poultry and horticulture with competent instructors. The course is free and boarding for distant attendees is offered at 3 dollars for the term or 1 dollar per day.

Seek Way to Control Small Mines on Prices

Washington July 12 Representatives of operators of non Union coal mines will be called together this week to consider means of dealing with smaller operators selling coal at prices higher than the maximum recently reached by voluntary restraint. Secretary Hoover said today. The coal strike situation remains unsettled as operators and miners in the unorganized field decide on President Harding’s wage scale proposal and immediate resumption of the March 31 wage rates.

Pecan Industry Film Shown in Sumter County

A reel of Sumter county scenes illustrating the pecan industry will be shown at the Rylander theater on Wednesday and Friday as part of the regular program. The National Pecan Groves company of Washington, D C produced the film and it covers budding grafting nursery work setting out growth up to several years old and harvesting packing. It showcases Flintside a 5000 acre pecan property being expanded by about 500 acres annually for sale in 5 acre tracts. The film has drawn interest during eight months of display in Chicago theaters.

Hawkinsville Hotel Fire Fatal to Guest

The Globe House hotel in Hawkinsville burned at 2 a.m. Monday, gutting the two story building. Guest Robert Elrod, 45, died later from injuries after leaping from a window to escape the flames. A prior closet fire in the same building had been extinguished the previous night.

Planing mill escapes major blaze in Thomasville

The boilery room and sawdust shed of W. E. Beverly's planing mill were destroyed by fire yesterday at noon. Swift firefighting saved the planing mill, dry kilns, fire freight cars, and other equipment from burning, with loss not material and only a brief delay to operations.

Masks must 69 says Hardwick

Atlanta July 11 Governor Hardwick in a letter to W W Rainey pledges support to Clifford Walker and warns that if the Ku Klux Klan refuses to drop its masks the general assembly will be asked to criminalize wearing masks in Georgia. The letter urges leaders to discard masks and secrecy or strong steps will be taken. A resolution praising Hardwick for his stand against lynching and KKK masks was adopted by the Evangelical Ministers association amid a small turnout.

X Ray Taken Of Hip Of Robt Hodges After Fall

Robt Hodges, hurt in a fall in an Atlanta elevator shaft Saturday night, is resting well and should recover quickly, his mother Mrs A F Hodges reported on her return home Monday. An X ray of the hip aided the surgeons in treatment. The accident occurred in Hodges rooming house where residents reportedly operate the elevator. Hodges and Dan Chappell of Americus were present. the shaft was on Hodges floor level and the hall darkened as they emerged. Hodges fell 25 or 30 feet and was unconscious. Chappell barely avoided the fall.

Washington July 11 The senate adopted a resolution by Senator Heflin Alabama requiring publication in August of a crop report detailing cotton acreage abandonment up to July first.

Judge Cozart backs Hardwick in Alabama race

Columbus July 11 Judge A W Cozart expresses strong support for Governor Hardwick in the coming campaign. In a letter to the Enquirer Sun he praises Hardwick as a statesman with brains backbone and experience and says his administration has been wise and largely error free He states he will support Hardwick over Walker noting the need for a governor with stamina and backbone.

Boy Scouts to Collect Soap Wrappers for Kitchens

Georgia Bonus Bill Proposed for WWII Veterans

Representative Ernest G. Bentley of Fulton proposes a Georgia wartime bonus of 12 dollars per month per month of service, funded by an 80 cent per gallon tax on oils and 2 cents per pound on greases. The plan envisions five yearly installments beginning January 1, with about 2 million dollars sought over five years and potential tax‑driven extensions if revenues fall short. Administration would be with the adjutant general. all Georgia servicemen would be eligible.

Bountiful Cotton Stalks Demonstrate Local Growth

W L English showcased two cotton stalks from Americus area holdings by himself and W W Dykes. One stalk bore 22 large bolls and about 20 small ones with blooms, the other had 15 large bolls and many small ones. No boll weevil evidence observed on either plant.

Hoffman Bankrupt Stock Sold in Cotton Avenue Store

The bankrupt stock of Reuben Hoffman in the storeroom at 116 Cotton Avenue was bought Tuesday by Mrs. E. Pearlman from Mrs. Fannie Hoffman. Pearlman paid 1050 dollars for stock, fixtures and accounts, with C. Sokulow placed in charge as the store will be operated by Mrs. Pearlman.

In Roanoke Virginia at 10 o clock this morning no clerks joined a planned general walkout at the Norfolk and Western offices. By 10 30 o clock a statement from the railroad president indicated no widespread strike had occurred.

Lawhornes to trial at Tifton Wednesday

In Tifton on July 11 the murder cases against Simms and Floyd Lawhorne for the June 13 killing of 70 year old S. Monk were set for trial in Tift Superior Court on Wednesday. The Lawhorne family dispute centers on self defense claims with Floyd alleging Simms fired. Also scheduled for Wednesday is H. T. Wrennick’s embezzlement case from the Bank of Ty Ty, about 5060 dollars, following his sensational arrest and statement.

Hutchison Sets Open Qualifying Record At Skokie

Jock Hutchison of Chicago, last year’s British Open champion, fired a 33 54 67 for 154, then 68 in the afternoon to total 135, a new Open qualifying record in American tournaments on a wet Skokie Country Club course. Stewart Maiden totaled 156.

Sumter melons arrive in good quality but demand scarce

Sumter county melons come in plentifully yet find little demand. Two carloads of Irish Grays, about 25 pounds, were loaded Tuesday morning but buyers seek melons of 28 pounds or more. Quality is fine, but June rain reduced size and yield. Vacuum cleaners are handy for men. A woman cannot hit her husband with one.
