Chicago July 8 The railway shopmen enter the second week of their strike with no sign of returning to work to seek settlement through the Railroad Labor Board. Railroads remain immovable, viewing the strike as against the government not the roads.
A petition circulated by Richland Mens Bible class seeks to change Glen Hudsons sentence from hanging for the murder of two small children to life imprisonment. Widespread doubt has grown amid recent inquiries into Mrs Hudsons relocation and other conditions, prompting governors response to review the case.
In Tift county on July 8, more than 150 carloads or about four trains of watermelons moved through. Tops for the season include unblemished Ish Grays. No bids were offered for felons on the track, and cars had sold for as low as $50 previously. Growers note this first cash crop of the year.

Atlanta July 8 A young evangelist George D Cobb married 14 year old Dorothy Etrie at Gainesville and was arrested for kidnaping. They were found at a local hotel registered as Mr and Mrs Cobb with a marriage certificate dated July 4. The girl claimed age eighteen and Gainesville officers said no charge against her. she was returned to her parents.
Atlanta July 8 Statistics by Representative Culpepper vice chairman of the house appropriations committee show that 5 542 650 will be necessary to pay Confederate pensions in Georgia up to January 1 1924. Culpepper chaired the pensions sub committee and drew figures from Judge J W Lindsay state commissioner of pensions The appropriations committee is dumbfounded and fears a large deficit when accounts close December 31 1925 unless revenue rises.
Washington July 8 Senator Thomas E Watson of Georgia and Mrs Watson, both ill with bronchitis at their Chevy Chase home, were today reported by their physician to be convalescent. The senator, however, will not be able to resume his duties for another period.
Berlin July 8. Two German experts plan to travel to Paris to request a moratorium from the reparations commissions. The aim is to enable Germany to spread cash payments over a longer period, according to semi official statements.
American embassy officials said no formal representations had been made by Britain to involve the United States in Allied rehabilitation projects for Germany but the subject has circulated in diplomatic and other circles and there is hope the US might be induced to lend support. The German mark collapse was linked to reports that Germany could not meet the July reparations payment due in a week.
Washington reports Germany faces grave political complications after the Rathenau assassination crisis. The Commerce Department cables that strict measures are being enacted to protect the republican regime as currency depression deepens, with exchange rates sinking to historic lows.
Tifton July 8. Cotton Mills which manufacture fine yarns exclusively are running both night and day shifts for the first time in two years. The change may be temporary and no extra force is being employed, but the increased payroll is welcomed in Tifton business circles and is seen as a sign of normal conditions returning in industry.

Sumter county banks report a stronger financial position over the past year with loans down, deposits up by 2,.40.72 million, and total county resources at 3.13 million. Major gains include Empire Bank Americas and Planters Bank increasing capital and surplus, amid steady public thrift and improved banking service.

Warwick defeated Leslie 3 to 1 at Leslie ground in Thursday action. Wilson struck out 10 in a strong Leslie performance but Warwick rallied late for the win. In the rematch at Warwick Johnson delivered a two base hit after a Scarborough walk, and Bradley limited the hits as Warwick earned a 4 to 2 victory.
Tifton July 8 Tuesday night July 21 will be charter night for the Tifton Kiwanis club. The group organized in April and the charter has waited for General Harris to return from Toronto to deliver it in person.
Senator Tarpley of Georgia introduces a bill to criminalize conspiracies to hinder lawful business by striking railroad workers. The measure bans picketing around railroad premises during strikes, prohibits nonemployees from influencing workers, and forbids intimidation aimed at stopping lawful operations. Tarpley says the bill focuses on curbing striking railroad men and will be vigorously pursued this session.
A Sunday evening program at Central Baptist features an 8 oclock service led by Gordon Howell and a large chorus singing old-time gospel songs. A quartet including Parrott Pool E Boswell Geo Marshall and Gordon Howell will perform a special message with Mrs Dan OConnell on solo. Atlanta July 8 It is generally understood that N P Pratt chairman of the board of trustees of the Georgia School of Technology and for the past several months administrative head of the school will be nominated for the presidency of Tech to succeed Dr K G Matheson resigned in April to head Drexel Institute at Philadelphia Pratt resides in Atlanta and is a nationally recognized metallurgical engineer with significant contributions to science and industry He is not an educator by profession but a recognized business executive and is considered thoroughly competent to head the school
Atlanta July 8. The filibuster against the Wombie bill to repeal the tax equalization law remained in effect through Friday's session, as the Senate adjourned at noon until Monday. State highway engineer W R Neel denies any influence by federal engineer Crossland in the Elbert county quarry purchase.
