At Cracaco July 7 the Democratic national convention opened with Harrity calling the session to order at 12 50 as crowds congested the streets around the vast Coliseum. The day featured brisk movement of attendees by rail and elevated lines, a bustling scene of clubs and fanfare, and praise for the new convention hall described as the largest permanent amusement and exhibition building in the world.
Sergeant at Arms Martin led a 600 member staff to admit delegates as the enormous hall opened at 10. The grand setup included a 160 foot American flag, a mammoth arena with two galleries, and banners replaced by upright state staffs. Delegates eyed a tense opening day with talks of protests and possible withdrawals amid a high stakes political showdown.
The scene near the doors grew tense as delegates pressed forward while crowding and shouts filled the hall. Leaders like Hill and Daniels drew lines of support as Harrity called the convention to order and prayers opened a contested assembly.
The New York delegation roared in applause as Daniel won by a large majority over Dante. McDermott spoke for Mil and the convention adjourned until 10 the next morning after Silver supporters celebrated the outcome.
