Pretty young stowaway ties Antwerp voyage to Utica girl
A 17 year old girl named Annie Williams stowed away on the steamer Antwerp departing Antwerp Belgium. She claimed to be born in Utica New York and to have lost both parents with a father who left her $12 000. She had married an Englishman Akins in New York on June 1 1803 and after Europe arrived he deserted her leaving her penniless. She hid in a state room until discovered by a sailor and reported to Captain Edwards who treated her kindly. This was reported as the first female stowaway case to this country. The second item notes a Southwest ern Railroad stockholders meeting in Macon with mention of Central system reorganizations and a mortgage foreclosure, filed January 23 1803, and a call for full attendance.
