Rumor says General Weyler and Admiral Navarro may settle a dispute in Havana with a duel after the gunboat Cameta was destroyed. Accounts describe heavy Cuban fire sinking the vessel, killing ten including two officers, and a torpedo being detonated from shore. Six officers survived as the wreck was secured.
Dispatches from Mauritius describe the wreck of the British Indian troop ship Warren Hastings off Reunion Island after striking near Kounion. About 1,232 soldiers plus families were aboard. troops were orderly as boats and lines aided landing. Only two native servants died. officers organized a disciplined evacuation as the ship listed and sank.
Washington January 27 The senate foreign relations committee again considered the arbitration treaty but did not reach a conclusion. All members attended and the meeting adjourned with hopes to devote Saturday night to the bill. A key issue remained whether an amendment could guard Monroe Doctrine against any encroachment, a point unsettled at adjournment.
The Nebraska Populist Mr Allen accuses Senator Gray of past influence as the senate debates West Point cadet attendance at the inauguration. The military academy appropriation and a proposed permanent attendance rule are discussed amid objections. Mrs Olivet, Beers' niece, had lived in Alabama and married Oliver Olivet years ago amid family opposition. Her life was insured for 5000 dollars. In December their three children were sent to an orphan asylum in New Orleans. Olivet recently vanished and is missing, while evidence of drowned wife awaits Chief Dees' letter.
Jan 27 report from Observer Cook states the Ohio is open to Pittsburgh the Missouri to Kansas City and the Mississippi to Davenport with cold weather likely to close rivers as far south as the Ouia mouth. In Columbus Georgia Colonel George P Swift a major cotton manufacturer died at his residence in his eighty second year.
In a January caucus, after Senator Pritchard spoke, Republicans adopted a resolution and replied to Populist inquiries. They stated continued willingness to cooperate with any General Assembly members elected as Populists and avoided settling intra-rank controversies. The move leaves Senator Buatlor's position influenced by Washington.
Robert Fitzsimmons begins light training for his upcoming bout with James J. Corbett. Pending the promoter Dan Stuart’s articles of agreement, heavy work is delayed until February 17, so Fitzsimmons stays in New York. He plans daily 12 mile runs from Bartholdi to Macomb’s Dam and back via Central Park, with brief dumbbell and wrist machine sessions.
