Minnie Fitzpatrick of Mobile says she carries a fortune between nine and ten million dollars and survived a conspiracy by doctors who allegedly wanted her to die to inherit. She claims to be grandniece of Mother Seton and kin to Newark bishop Bayley and Jersey City’s Robert Seton. She alleges her two former husbands, General Ketchum of the Confederate army and a Confederate Navy captain, are dead.
Fifty convicts escaped from the Coal Creek branch state prison by crawling through bars at dusk. Guards fired as they pursued, with reports of prompting robberies nearby and unclear captures. Several convicts previously freed by miners were later recaptured. Another account notes additional escape via a water gate and robberies as darkness fell. The era recalls Coal Creek disorders from two years prior.
Lancaster reports Conestoga cotton mills Nos. 1 and 2 owned by John Farnum & Co. resume on February 1 after weeks of half-time operation, with over 2,000 workers affected. Berutrnex silk mill and Saxonville wooden mills also back to full or near full force, while icebound legal and political notes from Iowa, Alabama, and Mississippi accompany this rural to urban employment update.
In Wasnikotow the morning session opened with the Wilson bill under committee of the whole. Tennessee’s Mr Taylor proposed substituting McKinley iron ore provisions while Messrs Chicering White opposed the bill. Alabama’s Mr Denson, praising Jacksonian principles, urged protection for iron ore to shield American labor and industry. The Ways and Means committee amended customs and revenue sections, lowering cigarette tax to a dollar, expanding binding twine imports from New Zealand, and striking the McKinley reciprocity clause. The Hawaiian annexation matter and federal election law debates also moved forward in the Senate and House sessions.
A Virginia North Carolina delegation urged Ways and Means Committee Chairman Wilson to oppose higher manufactured tobacco taxes and land tax increases. The full committee voted 7 to 2 to favor the internal revenue bill, with Cochran and Stevens dissenting.
On the third day of the Hinkle trial, a large crowd filled the courtroom as witnesses described the shooting near Dr. Hinkle’s office. Testimony detailed flashes, screams, and the order of events, with Dr. J B Hinkle preparing a lengthy defense statement and his son Dr A B Hinkle set to testify as the session adjourned after opening the defense.
