A severe blizzard swept across the Southeast, crippling Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. Atlanta reports power outages and blocked streets as Americus loses telegraph and telephone links and recovery efforts race to restore lines and services.
Atlanta reports property damage running into thousands as a near-blizzard swept Georgia Tuesday causing icy streets, swaying ice crusted power lines from Tallulah stations failing, and steam plants pressed into use. City avoids major traffic crashes despite hazardous travel and streetcar service remains irregular as crews work to restore traction and power.
Macon was cut from Atlanta and intermediate points Tuesday night as a Mississippi origin sleet storm damaged wires. Railways kept schedules with limited impact. Central of Georgia and Southern Railway patched links to Hapeville and McDonough, crews working to restore. Communication to Atlanta reached via Savannah and Augusta, but full restoration not completed by midnight.
Atlanta on January 24 reports Mayor Walter A. Sims describing severe weather and a pneumonia influenza outbreak causing widespread hardship among the poor. The city warden confirms many requests for municipal aid as crowds line corridors outside Mr Johnson's office seeking relief for food and fuel shortages.
Savannah January 24 reports the steamship Persian disabled off the coast with a broken rudder though not believed to be in danger amid heavy weather. Applause is forbidden in Russian theaters.
At Lausanne the British and French pressed Turkey to submit the Mosul oil district dispute to the League of Nations while Turkey demanded a plebiscite. Curzon warned of grave consequences including possible warfare as Turkish delegates refused the League submission. US interests watched talks closely toward a potential Turkish American treaty and broader economic accord.
Georgia public service officials consider lowering freight charges on calcium arsenate to help farmers combat boll weevil. Henry P. Everett, once chamber of commerce expert, announced a rate nisi to carriers with a show cause hearing set for February 13 at 10 oclock. Americus and Sumter county urge reduced costs, aiming to include interstate railroads in the effort.
Bastrop Louisiana January testimony at Morehouse hearing describes Captain Skipwith’s request to block Bastrop Mer Rouge messages. Baptist minister Dr L N Holmes testified he visited the Gray home Aug 24 with Mr and Mrs Gray. Gray later returned to Bastrop after a baseball game and denied involvement. Gray testified he guarded the Higginbotham home that night after receiving a threatening letter and stayed until after midnight.

Attorney General A V Coco says star witness to testify this afternoon amid rumors of an important identification. Cavalry and militia units ordered to move to home stations after officials depart.
The Alcazar theater equipment was loaded onto trucks as the lease and all gear were bought by the Rylander interests. Emory Rylander declined to reveal plans for the equipment or the building. It was believed an out of town buyer would use the gear in a small South Georgia town.
Maj. Gen. Joseph T. Dickman warns that French pressure risks collapsing conservative Germany, prompting a war of liberation with Russia mobilizing about 1,000,000 troops. He argues Germany and Russia could outnumber France eight to one, and that a new conflict could erupt within two weeks unless Britain curbs Paris.
Washington Jan 24 The House adopted a Green resolution to amend the constitution to bar further tax exempt securities after a bitter all day wrangle by seven votes. The roll showed 228 to 103 with Republicans largely opposing and Democrats supporting, twenty three Democrats with administration leaders and twenty four Republicans breaking party ranks. The measure goes to the Senate, though leaders doubt passage this session.
Washington, Jan. 24. A bill sponsored by the General Federation of Women's Clubs and a resolution to amend the Constitution to legalize federal marriage and divorce laws were introduced by Senator Capper. The bill would require two week court testing before marriage, health and mentality certificates, parental consent for minors, and ban marriages of feeble minded, close relatives, or different races.
In Ehrenbreitstein Germany American forces complete Rhine watch and move toward Antwerp as French troops and a band aid the flag ceremony. Four sergeants from the Seventh machine gun battalion assist Maj. Gen. Allen in lowering U S colors. Troops review then depart by train for St Mihiel transport, with first section leaving at 3 45 p m and second at 9 30 p m.
Major General Henry T. Allen received a brief letter from Chancellor Cuno praising the American troops for exemplary conduct as they depart. Allen replied he would formally turn the American zone over to the French on January 27 or later, lamenting the end of harmonious official relations. Lord Kilmarnock and Jacqueny called personally upon General Allen.
