Henry Word will address the Southern group of the American Farm Bureau Federation at its January 2021 meeting in Muscle Shoals. The program covers efficient community units leadership development cooperative marketing farm finance, with Florence hosting and delegates to inspect the Muscle Shoals projects.
Washington reports the German government accepted Representative Alanson B. Houghton of New York as ambassador to Berlin. Houghton’s name will be sent to the Senate this week for approval.
On Armistice Day Christian Endeavor lads planted four memorial trees at the city hospital grounds to honor eight Sumter County soldiers who died in the great war. James Wheeler reported to the American Forestry Association and Charles Lathrop Pack urged registration on the National Roll. Tree allocations list four pairs of names for the memorials.
George Baldwin Selden, 77, inventor of the first gasoline propelled vehicle and pioneer in the automotive industry, died at his Rochester home today.
A Negro man in Thomasville died Sunday night by self-inflicted gunshot, pressing a rifle under his arm and firing. Ill for weeks, he had predicted his funeral for Monday, which he fulfilled. His wife slept beside him and his mother sat by the fire, both unaware of the gunshot between 2 and 5 AM.
A coroner's jury in Douglas Georgia on January 17 found that William West, a Black man, died at the hands of Leon Wooten and Vernon Kite, two young white men from near Pridgen, as investigators probe the fatal incident.
In Tifton January contest between the Methodist Sunday school classes the Men and Women Bible classes led alternately across the first three Sundays. With two Sundays left the loser will furnish dinner for both classes, drawing strong interest from participants and observers.
George Stanford former cashier of the Bank of Waverly Harris county was sentenced by Judge Monro to one year in the state prison after pleading guilty to embezzlement tied to a $16,000 shortage.
South Georgia Normal College trustees in Valdosta moved from a two-year program to a full four-year bachelor’s degree plan. Chancellor David Barrow attended the meeting. faculty instructed to prepare the new curriculum at once. The two-year program will continue alongside the new four-year course.
General Walter A. Harris of Macon will attend Americus Kiwanis ladies night dinner Friday arriving at 7 25 and program plans promise something unusual. Harris is district governor for Georgia and this marks his first visit to the Americus club as the Kiwanis seventh anniversary is celebrated with clubs nationwide.
A. F. Robinson of Alpine Texas formerly Americus writes to remit another year. He praises West Texas business in Brewster County and Alpine calling it the garden spot of Texas at 5204 feet above sea level. He invites Georgia friends to visit via the Sunset Railroad.
Frank Andrews of Ameritus Automobile Co helps uncover a regional burglary ring led by Tom Lockett, a fugitive once wanted for cheating and swindling. Lockett, his wife Mozelle, and accomplices confessed to multiple thefts in Ashburn Fitzgerald Roch elles, with Lockett recounting a three year Americus absence and past jail terms.
Thomas county farmers voted to open a milk depot in Thomasville after a mass meeting with about one hundred dairy operators. They plan to ship sour cream to the Moultrie Creamery next week and start with seventy cows, aiming to reach five hundred within six months and establish a local creamery.
Washington Jan 17. Japanese and Chinese arms conference delegates took up the coal and iron mines in the Kiao Chow leasehold of Shantung but made virtually no progress toward an agreement.

Albany January 17 A fight between the new police commission and Mayor H A Peacock over staffing erupted after a Saturday meeting. Assistant Chief W E Whiddon and three patrolmen were displaced, while Julian Wallace resigned as assistant chief and R D Foxhall was chosen. The mayor urged retaining Whiddon as Chief Wallis lacks experience. The rift between political allies and the mayor remains unresolved with no further action announced.
New York January 17 J P Morgan and Company opened and closed the subscription books for the thirty million dollar development and general mortgage bond issue of the Southern railway bearing 6 1 2 percent interest It was announced the issue was heavily oversubscribed
A severe earthquake described as very severe was recorded on Georgetown University’s seismograph from 10:58 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. It was detected 2500 miles south of Washington, with the event noted by geologists as a significant tremor.
Dr and Mrs Frank L Cato and L Cato Jr become the first American donors to the Woodrow Wilson Foundation Fund sending a $10 check via the Times-Recorder. The note from May M Cato thanks the paper for space and voice in community interests and praises its uplift of the community.
A spectacular 834 pound collard was brought to Americus from the garden of Mrs T A Wimbish four miles from Ellaville and sold to Sparks grocery. The massive head resembled a cabbage in size and weight, described as one of the finest collards seen locally.
Robbers wrecked the Bank of Blythe in Blythe Georgia Sunday night and escaped with 1700 dollars in cash. The theft was discovered only after the cashier, who was in Augusta at a family member’s bedside, returned to work.
Washington January 17 Former service men testifying before the senate investigating committee on the Watson charge said bodies of soldiers buried in France were not harassed with a rope or black cap. Bamford Flynn and Sullivan offered conflicting accounts while Lamb described two executions and later said a body was placed in a coffin with the rope and cap still on it.
Tifton welcomed newspaper men from the Eleventh, Second and Third districts for a regular district press meeting.
