Scriven's Drawers announce a sale at 754 per pair offering first quality summer and winter weights. These are not the cheap single seam goods seen elsewhere at 75 cents, but items valued at 1.50 and 1.25 dollars.
A Georgian inventor Rev W H Keeling of Atlanta claims a plan to blow up the Spanish navy in Havana harbor if needed. He has conferred with Cuban junta representatives in Washington and offers to equip an expedition using dynamite torpedoes to destroy ships by electricity. He seeks no money and hopes to sell the concept to the U S government after proving its value.
A flood of resolutions fills the national monetary convention in Indianapolis with plans for reform. Delegates attend committees, seats rearranged by state, and the group votes to forward all resolutions to the committee without full reading. In Washington, the Senate enters executive session after a motion by Mr Sherman. In New York, a bid for a government building contract at the Tennessee Centennial Exposition is approved without advertising. An injunction request by Grannan against the West Ol association and the New Jockey club is denied.
Paris dispatch cites distress in Alaska where Russians allege violence and oppression by North American Commercial Company. Reports claim agents entered Orthodox church during services to drive worshippers to work and threats against a Russian school. Washington officials say no official corroboration yet and note three school systems in Alaska amid religious tensions between Orthodox and unorthodox Russian communities.
Five children drowned in an ice skating accident at Kossuth avenue and Ashland place in St Louis. Victims include Amanda Arnold 15 Arthur Arnold 18 George Matthews 9 Sadie Matthews 15. John Gleason attempted a rescue and was seriously injured. another child, Homer, also drowned.
Kansas City reels as Lexow committee findings spark talk of graft. Mayor James Mills Jones pledges full cooperation, while alleging Commissioners Johnson and Fyka traded protection money for police positions. Former police judge recalls cash offers to shield gambling dens and policy shops from 1894.
