Born November 6 1836 in Talbot county, he served in the Civil War then practiced law in Talbot county before rising to solicitor general and state attorney general. He joined the Georgia Supreme Court, was re elected, but resigned in ill health. He previously served as U S assistant attorney general under Cleveland and as speaker of the Georgia House.
