Desperate Mafeking assault ends with heavy losses

A correspondent describes the Dec 26 attack on Boer lines at Mafeking. British forces led by Major Pantera and Captain Williams pressed the enemy’s position with 7pounders, Maxim, and an armored train, but the assault failed. Of 40 storming troops, 21 were killed and 4 died of wounds. 3 officers were wounded. The defenders buried dead in the cemetery that evening. A separate item notes William Pardes buying 10,000 acres of coal and land near Crab Orchard and Abram Lants securing options on 100,000 acres of mineral and timber in Harlem, Perry, and Letcher.
