A U S court of inquiry investigates the sinking of the battleship Maine. Evidence suggests many bodies may be recovered from the forward hatch with firemen among the dead. Public festivities are suspended for three days as a mark of respect to the Maine’s deceased.
Washington dispatch says United States warships are forming squadrons for quick attacks. Asiatic squadron may strike the Philippines, while European forces threaten Havana and the Atlantic coast. Flagships Olympia and San Francisco lead moves. three coordinated strikes could raise U.S. prestige and defend Atlantic cities as war nears. Injured Maine sailors improving. prison guard killed in Colorado incident.

Washington orders urgent haste as Navy officials push to finish the vessels to bolster Atlantic harbor defenses. Maine wrecking efforts proceed with contractors signing to raise the warship.
President McKinley joined the Washington Day exercises at the University of Pennsylvania amid a large student turnout. Over 2000 students formed a parade to the Academy of Music, cheering Pennsylvanias and greeting Charles Harrison in a ceremonial welcome by the home route.
In Savannah on February 22 a grand military celebration honored Washingtons birthday with a general inspection of troops by Captain Oscar J. Brown.
