Fires in residence districts prompt quick department runs
Three fires yesterday and today called out the department with short runs in residence districts. A roof blaze at Jackson street home owned by the St Hawkins Estate and occupied by negroes caused slight damage. Lester Williams’s Church street home burned from an ash pit but was quickly extinguished with minor damage. A late 8 o'clock call to the crematory roof fire resulted in $100 damages to the plant.

Georgia researchers report about 25 percent fewer sweet potatoes in commercial storage compared with last season, though the upper third of the state shows a 30 to 40 percent increase. Warehouse capacity totals 854,000 bushels with mixed regional reductions and high home use. Approximately half the crop is for home use, 16.9 percent sold locally, 10-12 percent stored for shipment, and 13-15 percent spoiled. Remaining crop is fed to livestock. Funeral services set for Hom Lee, local police lieutenant killed in a Tuesday afternoon gunfight near the negro cemetery off Ash Street.
