Chicago February eighteen. Ibert I. Lauer secretary treasurer Briggs Turivas Steel Wreck Salvaging and Contracting Co indicted for landing a 15 bribe to a federal income tax official. DA Clyne says this is one case in a huge national swindle of the government.
A chamber of commerce note reports manufacturers await definite shipping dates before committing to a branch plant in Americus. Machinery and piece goods are scarce, with an estimated six months to secure shipments, prompting delays and a promise to revisit the proposal later.
Leslie February notes show farmer J M Summerford selling his large Leslie farm to C Summerford and W T Anderson. Albany’s A L Knight begins Union High School building contract work. Local visitors include Mr and Mrs W Parker from Americus and Dr J M Green planning church W M A efforts.
Frederick Cody, the so-called mystery man linked to the Newberry senatorial campaign, faces federal charges for alleged conspiracy to influence Newberry's election. Prosecutor Frank Daily cites Cody as a legislative agent for large corporations, notably American Telephone and Telegraph and American Book Company, detailing his behind the scenes role and finance by the Barnes family connections. Cody, always smiling, denies or deflects questions as the government promises to reveal his methods.
The Times-Recorder reports that Ellaville's namesake is Ella Scarbrough born February 18. The 1858 town name honors Mrs. Scarbrough, daughter of Capt. Robert Burton, with ties to Mrs. Chas. F. Crisp and other local figures famed in the community.
Lillia Braswell filed a damage claim through her attorneys seeking 5000 for personal injuries and 92.50 for expenses after a December 29 fall on a sidewalk in front of Americas Undertaking Company. She tripped over a water cut‑off trap door and sustained fractures bruises and lacerations. The city argues the property owner bears liability for the overhanging obstruction.
Local notes from Plains dated February 19 highlight visits from Jerome Connaly of Birmingham and others, church and club gatherings, a Plains water works well nearing completion, and numerous school events. Former treasury secretary and railroad administrator William G. McAdoo said he would not allow his name on presidential primary ballots and urged uninstructed delegations to the Democratic national convention. He argued leadership must serve the nation, not individuals, and said accepting an unsolicited nomination would be a citizen’s duty.
Miss Susan Myrick of Milledgeville visits Sumter County rural schools with County Superintendent McMath and Mrs. Williams to promote health and physical education. She stresses mental growth while urging ground apparatus and equipment, noting strong local response and statewide outreach by G N and I C as part of the extension program.
Postmaster Davenport reports two rural carriers out with influenza on Routes A and C and a distributing clerk sick as well. He asks patrons to call at the postoffice for mail until carrier service resumes, noting the flu has invaded the ranks and affects the entire office.
