Captain J M Burk of the state prison inspection board surveyed five large plan tations in Sumter county yesterday. The Huguenin plantation, two near DeSoto, part of Hooks place, and the Speer farm near the city were among those examined. Burk favored the lands and noted the convict farm near the city as well kept. The Prison Commission seeks four thousand acres in one block, and Sumter is poised to supply it.

Washington February 17 The Benedictine friars of the United States propose a plan to ease urban crowding by purchasing a large estate in Texas to build an abbey and a new town named St An. They will lay out 150 farms within two miles of the town center and attract farmers from congested areas. The settlement will include schools clubs and social facilities with expansions as population grows.

Macon February 16 Officers went to take 6 year old Maud Mason from her mother over alleged immoral conditions but found the child missing this afternoon. Ordinary Wiley had been asked to remove the child and place her in an institution. The mother defied officers.
