Amid debates in Congress, Republican senators largely oppose free coinage of the American product. Reports note friction over tariff bills and Chinese exclusion while prominent figures push for electoral reforms and cigarette suppression. A fire started at 5:30 AM in the male wing of the Mississippi state asylum two miles north of Jackson. An inmate set the blaze with a match found in the attic. He perished, along with another patient. About 700 others were moved from the structure as six wards burned and the building suffered severe damage. Water pressure hampered firefighting, and the facility may be rebuilt for displaced patients.
Police commissioners this week investigated charges formerly brought against Officer Wilkins. They found the charges practically substantiated but reinstated him in view of his past conduct and standing, noting faithful service and effective work.

The plan promises fair provision for all holders and expects earnings to cover charges, with preferred stock yielding a dividend and some surplus for common stock. Existing 6 percent bonds would be paid in cash, while five percent bonds would convert to new bonds and income stock with a bonus in preferred stock.

A chaotic Superior Court expenses report is released, detailing jurors, witnesses, and counties involved.
Two Russian men Marovinsky and Klyvovich were arrested yesterday in Albany at the request of Hebrew merchant J.T. Simon of Simon & Rudman Albany. They are accused of misdemeanor and owe Simon $23 and $53 for goods. Preliminary trial set for Thursday morning before Judge Matthowd. Defense by Smith and Hixon. A local lawyer predicts Simon may sue for false imprisonment after release.
