A funeral for Carroll J. Clark Jr. drew hundreds to First Baptist Church in a service led by Dr. Carl W. Minor. The obituary praised his clean life, community impact, and church service, noting his early devotion, musical talents, and generosity. The pallbearers included local figures and veterans from John D. The remains of James Morris killed in an airplane accident were sent from Americus to Rochester Pennsylvania. The body is expected Sunday afternoon, with funeral planned for Monday. Floral designs accompanied the casket as friends accompanied the body to the train.
Washington Feb 3 The American debt funding commission was called to meet late today to discuss formal recommendations to President Harding on funding Great Britain's war debt as approved by the commission last night. It hopes to deliver a draft of its recommendations to the president tonight.
Savannah prepares to host the Georgia Press association mid winter meeting on February 23 and 24 led by president W. G. Sutlive. A river boat will be loaned for tours along the river and terminals, with the Lions club hosting a luncheon. Attendance is reported as potentially the largest ever.
In Thomasville on Feb 3 the satsuma orange market shows many home grown trees. Growers report rising plantings across the county as demand for planting stock exceeds supply. The fruit is said to endure cold, is easy to grow, and sells well for profit. Reports from West Florida note hundreds of groves and ongoing plantings.
Frank Sheffield of the Bank of Commerce urges Americus residents to keep the Americus Playground intact, arguing a new high school should be built on adjacent property rather than on the playground. He notes women’s clubs funded and maintained the site, and opponents say adjacent sites like Gyles property offer suitable school grounds without harming the playground.
In Schenectady on February 3, Dr. Simon Flezner of the Rockefeller Institute announced the discovery and isolation of the influenza germ. He credits Dr. Peter Olitsky and Dr. Frederick Gates. Isolation promises testing of antidotes and antitoxins, noting the germ is only visible when magnified a thousand times.
A letter from Battle Creek Michigan reports Miss Annie May Glenn improving rapidly after illness. Dr R P Glenn says her condition improves, and he hopes to return to Americus in a few days.
Dawson, Feb. 3. The two young sons of S. EK. Duren are missing from home since Monday night. They were with two boys from Mr. Turner’s family, all about 12 years old. They had been playing hockey after school but fled after disciplinary talk, aiming to join a carnival in Albany.
Washington February 3 Unqualified acceptance of Henry Ford's Muscle Shoals offer was proposed in the house today by Chairman Madden of the appropriations committee who said the matter should be treated as a business decision and placed in the hands of a man of proven capacity regardless of politics.
The contractor E. W. Rawlings has finished excavating about 8 feet below ground for the new First Methodist church. A blast shattered a few window panes across the street but the damage was repaired. Weather permitting, concrete pouring will start Monday morning to accelerate building work.
County officials of Sumter and the Americus legal fraternity enjoyed a bird supper at the Sign of the Pine Tea Room Friday night. Judge J A Hixon served as treasurer. Col W P Wallis, Americus bar association president, spoke briefly. About 40 courthouse officials and Americus lawyers attended, with short addresses by Col W T Lane, Judge J A Hixon, Judge Z A Littlejohn, Col G R Ellis, Gordon Howell, Hollis Fort and Captain John Cobb.
Nashville dated obituary for Mrs Rachel Jackson Lawrence aged 90, daughter of Andrew Jackson Jr. and widow of Dr John Marshall Lawrence, last surviving member of the Hermitage household. She lived at Birdsong near Nashville, turned over original Jackson data to the state, and will be buried beside her husband in the Hermitage garden.
The War Department said an error led to Brigadier General Walter Gordon being listed among major general promotion recommendations for the infantry school at Fort Benning. Brigadier General Edwin Babbit was correctly named for the vacancy created by Major General Allen’s retirement.
Federal agents went to the Hotel Derance to take David Lamar to Essex county penitentiary for a war time offense but found he had checked out yesterday and left no address.
Paris February 3 The Supreme Council of the League of Nations held a secret informal session and declined to put the reparations or Ruhr occupation questions on its agenda. The move ends any immediate possibility of the league initiating mediation between France and Germany.
Lloyd George denounces the Ruhr occupation as a gross folly and the wrong way to seek reparations in Plymouth after returning from Spain. He says it is a sure path not to obtain reparations.
The Reparations Commission on February 3 reaffirmed its January 26 resolution refusing Germany a moratorium. The move followed Germanys protest note sent yesterday and reflects continued firm stance on reparations payments.
German authorities called off the railroad strike and workers resumed on lines away from armed French soldiers. Observers saw this as a major improvement for the French position in the Ruhr and Rhineland, with a majority of workers in both regions returning to their jobs.
Fly ing glass struck H W Knowlton aurt IV, a gunner for Farmers Cotton Oil, when his car collided with Prof J E Mathis five miles from Americus near the Thalean school. Mathis and J A Walker escaped injury as both vehicles were damaged.
Reports from Baxley say Rev. T. F. Callaway formerly of Americus is preaching with force in evangelistic services there. Leaving Baxley he will go to Donaldsonville next Sunday to begin a series of meetings.
