War department orders sped Philippine reinforcement moves

The War Department issued orders to move U S reinforcements to the Philippines. Transport Sherman will depart New York next Thursday with the First Infantry and four companies of the Seventeenth Infantry. The following Thursday the Sherman will sail from its port with the Twelfth Infantry and remaining Seventeenth Infantry. General Otis to become military governor as the Grant approaches Gibraltar. Lawton to command in Otis's absence. Two regiments of infantry are ordered to Manila by the Pacific route. one already started from San Francisco. Expected arrival of additional units will boost General Otis' forces by about 7 000 men with guns. Transport Chester heads to Santiago with Sixth United States Cavalry and related units. Preparations include thorough inspection and renovation of transports for comfort and subsistence. Quarles elected United States senator in Wisconsin.
