Governor Smith may pardon Warner, argued to be a technical offense. Meanwhile miners on strike in Sullivan Pennsylvania report collective action against Enterprise colliery tied up by 700 workers over unpaid 10 percent wage increases.
Attorney Aga Bird Gardiner resigns his office under protest after Philbin is installed as district attorney of New York County. Gardiner states he did not resign voluntarily and objects to the action without legal authority. Philbin thanks the public official for support and vows cooperation and full assistance.
State Department received a preface note from Washington detailing a December 24 meeting between Chinese and foreign representatives in Peking. Hung Chang presented credentials to Minister Conger. Ching officials could not respond fully, and the note warned Beijing may be occupied until China complies with terms of the note.
An extensive smallpox quarantine goes into effect in Greenup County Kentucky with the state board of health ordering universal vaccination. Several hundred cases reported and a high death rate noted in Kentucky history as guards are posted and freight controls enforced. Separately in Loveville five men are under arrest for the murder and robbery of John Happleman, night watchman for Green River Asphalt Co., whose body was found with a crushed skull and pockets emptied.
