Funeral Obsequies For Senator Plumb Held In Senate
Washington December 21 Special The House of Representatives and the president and cabinet attended the funeral services for Senator Preston B. Plumb. The coffin lay in front of the vice presidents chair with floral tributes as Chaplain Butler read the prayers. Attending were the supreme court and diplomatic corps, with the dean and many senators and representatives escorting the body to Kansas. Plumb born October 12 1837 in Delaware county Ohio rose from printer to lawyer then to Kansas legislature, Union Army lieutenant colonel, later U S senator elected 1867 and twice reelected. He was a strong politician and popular in Kansas two years of term remaining at his death. Speculation swirls on his successor with Ingalls mentioned though not likely, others named include ex Governor Anthony congressman Morrill and Chief Justice Hartman Peck.
