A mob assaults a government office in Sizeh a Cairo suburb as British troops rush to the scene. Cairo remains quiet as authorities monitor the incident and security measures are heightened.
Hanford MacNider, national commander, calls for Christmas as a starting point for helping unemployed ex-soldiers through American Legion posts. Members will pledge to find temporary work and visit sick and wounded, with auxiliary support aiding families and arranging aid, visits, and follow ups with government bureaus.
The American Legion Auxiliary of Richland distributes Christmas boards to about two hundred ex servicemen from Stewart and Webster counties. They also offer free membership in the World War Memorial library opening in Richland in January.
Christmas sales by department stores in and around New York exceeded those of the last two years. The Federal Reserve Bank of this district released a summary based on data from sixteen representative stores, noting stronger holiday buying this year.
George D. Jones, county tax receiver, was back at his office today after discharge from Plains Hospital where he spent 125 days for an operation. He reports weight gain and rapid recovery, growing strong and well.

Terre Haute Ind December 24 Preparations for a grand homecoming for Eugene V Debs by local Socialists were abandoned when it was learned that his commutation by President Harding would not take effect until Sunday so the event could not proceed as planned.
President Harding commuted the sentences of Eugene V. Debs and 23 others convicted of hindering the government during World War I, effective Christmas Day. Five former American soldiers with life terms for murder of a British officer on the Rhine received full pardons the same day, per a White House statement.
Albany December 24 officers seized about fifteen gallons of Gordon's Dry Gin near Leslie. The liquor was found on the Bass property about two miles from Leslie. Agents Griffin Park Gordy Wilkins say the gin likely arrived by air from Fort Myers Florida. Four more gallons were captured later in Smithville at a livery stable. Federal charges were filed against the owners.
Christmas in Americus and Sumter county centers on Sunday services and a two day holiday starting Sunday. Public school carol singing at 5 PM in front of the Windsor hotel leads a festive mood. Monday business shuts. stores offices and banks close. A major event is the Americas Golf Club ball with Wat son Bell Hopps jazz orchestra. Charity drives continue via Empty Stocking fund Elks Rotarians and Salvation Army.
Cordele officials enacted broad pay reductions at a special city council session. The clerk treasurer Georgie Harris faced a 300 dollar cut, chiefs and department heads lost ten dollars monthly, the street superintendent was removed from pay, and the city physician took on sanitary inspector duties. Resignations by City Attorney R F Strozier and Alderman J H Lamb circulated as tensions rose.
Fred Campbell, a well known blind Negro preacher, was struck by a car driven by Mrs. Ben Lee Wood on Lee street near the monument after dusk. The vehicle stopped quickly, the preacher was bruised but not injured, and treated at his New street home by physicians.
No Christmas services will be held at the Catholic church this Sunday while the congregation seeks a priest. Local residents and visitors exchange holiday greetings. many travel to family homes in Americus, Seale, Sanford, and Albany. Special Christmas sermons are planned at Central Baptist with songs by the choir. the Third District Agricultural School dismisses for holidays and resumes January 3.

Richland’s Miss Ruby Dorman visits J W Chalkley in Concord while Am ericus residents Mr and Mrs J C Logan join a large family reunion hosted by A J Logan. Columbus trio J Hair and Z Hair holiday with Z A Littlejohn family, and many others from Atlanta Savannah Cuthbert Valdosta Buena Vista visit Americas for Christmas season.
A university student visits his father at his Cordele home over the holidays and will see brothers Will Ray and Edgar Butt there. Miss Catherine Argo, recently in Atlanta for two months, remains a holiday guest at her home until Tuesday.
The choir of Central Baptist Church will perform a beautiful Christmas music program at both morning and evening services. The public is cordially invited to attend.

Edith Carney visits mother Mrs Harriet Lumpkin in Montgomery. W C C Gaye couples spend Christmas in Atlanta with Caye family. W A Andrews of Eatonton, formerly Americus resident, visits brothers D R Andrews and Ed Andrews and sister Miss Julia Andrews. Midshipman Courtney Ivey of Annapolis returns Sunday for 10 day furlough with parents W S Ivey. Douglas Ivey from Atlanta also to spend time at home. Miss Shirley will spend holidays with Plains relatives. Lott Wart of America visiting Atlanta. Mr and Mrs W B McDaniel and three sons travel to Hardwick Ala for holiday with Mrs McDaniel’s mother Mrs Dan Ward. Lula Hay returns from three week visit to New York.
Union High varsity defeated Lee County boys 14 to 9 in a three game set. Leesburg girls won 14 to 5 and Leesburg scrubs 9 to 8. Union High shows strong record, with only one defeat in seven contests.

A tourist truck carrying Jack Stanley and his six family members collided with a Gulf Refining filling station pump Saturday morning. Backing to bring a reserve gasoline tank close, the engine stalled, the driver exited to crank it, and the truck rolled in gear, destroying the pump stand.
Ruth Roddenberry daughter of the late congressman S A Roddenberry married Lawrence Palin in Tifton on Thursday after a period of courtship. The couple had previously dated here in Thomasville where the engagement was noted but not encouraged due to youth.
Elizabeth Rhoda Brooks 72 died at the family residence in Ideal after a two year illness leading to paralysis. Funeral at home Sunday at 10 with Rev C E of the Methodist church officiating. Interment in nearby churchyard.
