The House adopted the conference report on expanding marine inspection laws and licensing mates for sailing vessels over 700 tons. Congressman Barney outlined the pension bill while Mr. Allen of Mississippi noted a shift from earlier partisan debates, praising progress and the Confederate dead. The session closed quickly with no criticisms and the bill lasting under 20 minutes.
Former senator Blackburn aims to reclaim a senate seat once held by William Lindsay. Atlanta Dec 17 The legislature adjourned after passing the general tax and appropriation bills. The senate won on appropriations, guiding house amendments through conference action. The state tax rate for 1898 and 1900 is set at 5.26, a 85 cent drop from 1907 and 1908 levels. Governor and comptroller general will fix exact figures. Georgia appropriates 5000 for geological survey.
Atlanta December 21 sensational allegations surge in the response by the Atlanta Street Railway Co to an injunction bill from Old Colony Trust of Boston. The company claims its Consolidated lines are illegal and that charters forbid contracts curbing competition or creating monopolies, challenging the validity of cross-town track condemnation.
Lieutenant Colonel Miley, General Shatter's chief of staff, testified before the war investigation commission in Washington today. The proceedings focus on events prior to the start of the war and assess the fate of key figures and strategic decisions.
Mayor A A Perry of Somerville Mass a Grand Army member condemns President McKinley s Atlanta address proposing federal care for Confederate cemeteries. He recalls the reunified nation s drama but questions national duty to graves of soldiers who fought the war urging continued fellowship without actions implying bias or reconciliation.
General Fred B. Ferguson of the United Confederate Veterans Alabama division writes President McKinley praising his Georgia legislature address. He thanks the president for recognizing Confederate soldiers and pledges prayers for his and his families’ blessings.
Washington December 21 Senator Butler of North Carolina announced an amendment to the pension appropriation bill aimed at extending pension coverage to all invalid soldiers widows minor children dependent relatives and army nurses who qualify under existing laws regardless of federal or confederate service The amendment excludes back pensions for those who served in the Confederacy and makes their claims effective from the bill's passage
