The Department of Agriculture reports 1921-22 world commercial cotton production at 15,593,000 bales, the smallest since 1900, with the United States and Egypt hit by crop disasters. China, South Africa, Mexico and others also below normal, while Russia virtually ceased cotton growing. Prices fell below production costs due to factory shutdowns and reduced demand after the war.
