Savannah December 20 The Peoples Bank with 100000 capital failed to open as officials took control from the state. An all day run yesterday preceded the closure. Realty Savings Trust posted a notice announcing suspension of payments due to unusual withdrawals and a petition for relief by receivership to conserve assets.
The members of Smith Lodge No. 223 Fi and A. M. held their annual officer election at their Richland hall Friday night. New officers are Hershall Davis as worshipful master P. D. Curaton senior warden T. L Bishop junior warden R. T. Dixon treasurer J. C. Dixon secretary W. C. Dixon senior deacon J. B. West Jr junior deacon A. Tatum senior steward F. P. Bryant junior steward. Business discussed included plans to entertain the Stewart Webster Masonic convention meeting in Richland December 26 and 27.
Americus spot cotton shows good middling at 17 3/4 cents. Liverpool market opens higher with quotations around 11.22, selling 10,000 bales. Futures show mixed values with February through June contracts around 10.6 to 10.9 levels, indicating modest gains and fluctuations.
A dense display of New York futures figures shows Jan Med May July contracts with mixed closes and opens. Prices move across morning and afternoon sessions, highlighting volatility and shifting interest in 2018-2019 maturities.
Richland December 20 The Stewart county ordinary received about 8600 to be distributed among Confederate veterans and widows in the county. Many pitiful cases appeared among the old people who had not received pension money in two years. A heart rending case involved a very old widow who rode to town to draw 250 and deposit it. She planned to spend 15 on clothing and had just enough to support herself until the next pension funds arrived, saying she would be glad to bury her too.
Five private cars booked for Thomasville during the next two weeks bring sportsmen from the East and winter residents. The party includes H. M. Hanna of Cleveland and Harry Payne Whitney of New York arriving for hunting occasion in Thomasville Georgia.
Rev. J. H. Harris formerly of Greenboro Ga, has accepted the pastorate at the First Baptist church in Waycross. He preached at both Sunday services.
Judge Litlejohn confirms the sale of half the Commercial City Bank building to Humber and Burke for a little over 25000 dollars. The deed is filed and occupancy transfers. tenants except Dr. J. T. Stokes must vacate by January 1. Bradley Hogg transfers bank records to Wallis & Fort as liquidating agent. A 20000 dollar mortgage payoff to Citizens and Southern Bank is settled in Savannah. Possible small dividend to stockholders may follow after further assessments are collected.
In Valdosta on December 29, reports say paper balloons used by children in pre Christmas celebrations caused a timber fire outside the city after a toy balloon rose and landed in a wooded area, resulting in substantial damage.
Thom asville merchants consider observing Monday after Christmas for the first time in seven years as Christmas falls on Sunday and holidays are usually observed on the following Monday.
Philadelphia witness H Taylor testified before the senate committee that he saw twelve American soldiers hanged at Is-Sur-Pilles France from April to June 1919 and could not confirm court martial convictions. Other witnesses cited 11 hangings, with various assertions about additional executions and wartime justice.
The Bethlehem Christmas pageant will be presented at Central Baptist church Friday at 8 o'clock. A large Bethlehem city scene will transform the church front with 35 young people in speaking roles and big choruses singing carols. The event promises pleasure and profit and the public is invited.
Richland Dec 20 Sapp Webb one of Richland's oldest citizens is critically ill with uncertain recovery prospects. Known as Uncle Sapp he is about seventy, a pioneer born and raised in the area. He has been treated at Eufaula hospital and other facilities, but doctors offer little hope. The community grieves for his condition.
A car stolen from Moultrie attorney Joe Gibson was returned early last night after police identified a suspect. Officers searched the suspect’s home days earlier but found nothing. The vehicle’s return followed intensified follow up and may reflect a prudent action by the accused.
F M Hill engineer in charge of the Tenth road district Georgia Highway depart ment arrived in Tifton from Blue Ridge with family and staff. He will establish the office this week and begin road maintenance in the district early next year under the 1921 assembly act, not likely to run in full until March 1.
On Wednesday evening at 7 30 o'clock the seniors of Union High school will present the little play Lighthouse Nan at Leslie. The public is urged to attend and support the performers with a large appreciative audience.
Salvation Army lists forty six white families in Americus and Sumter County needing clothing and food. Capt Luella Knox urges The Times Recorder readers to donate. Fifteen typical cases shown include children ages 4 to 14 and adults needing clothes shoes groceries and utensils. Homes lack feed or crop income this year.
Queenstown Ireland Dec 20 British troops will not be withdrawn today as removal from Ireland is suspended until the peace treaty is ratified. The Associated Press reports that no troop withdrawal will occur before ratification.

Georgia and Florida authorities seek G M Rogers a Cordele businessman who vanished last Wednesday. His grip and coat were found in a Pensacola hotel while his car with blood on it was located on the city outskirts. Police request searches across two states.
December promises to be a strong business month in Moultrie with Christmas Eve four days away. Merchants report sales ahead of last December and expect many to finish the year in good condition. Farmers report conditions improving compared to a year ago.

Washington December 20 The Associated Press reports a French delegation urged a plenary arms session to proceed so Britain can present its case for abolishing the submarine. A British spokesman warned that without agreement on submarines, naval limitation progress could be undone. France outlined a naval plan proposing a multi class fleet to ensure defensive strength under the war limitation framework.
Washington December 20 President Harding reportedly holds a personal view that the four power Pacific treaty does not cover the principal islands of the Japanese Empire. This stance contrasts with the interpretation voiced by spokesmen for the American delegation at the White House. the report frames it as his private opinion.
Christmas carols will be sung by the children of the Americas a schools downtown at 5 o clock Sunday afternoon Christmas day under Miss Ella Polk musical director of the city schools. The gathering will be on Lamar street in front of the Windsor hotel with a platform for Miss Polk. The public is invited to attend and join in the songs. The texts will be published by the Times Recorder the following Sunday.
In Richland on December 20 the Weston five dropped a close season opener 38 to 32 to Richland. A large Weston crowd cheered their team through a hard fought game. Plans are being arranged for future games with Buena Vista Shellman Lumpkin and others.
In Moultrie on December 20 a large number of Colquitt county farmers plan to grow strawberries next year. The local industry has expanded over several years with several large shipments during the season. Thousands of plants were set out this fall and are ready for market soon after the Florida crop. The fall plantings are expected to yield a fairly good crop next year.
Waycross December 20 six hundred Atlantic Coast Line shop workers in this city will be laid off indefinitely on December 23 under an order issued yesterday. One hundred in the locomotive pilot and one hundred in the car repair department are among those to be laid off, affecting the entire Coast Line system.
