Major General Henry W. Lawton was shot and killed in San Mateo while leading troops in an operation from Manila toward the town. Cavalry under Captain Lockatt and infantry units moved to seize San Mateo where insurgents were said to be active.
Troop movements and a stalled line of communication in South Africa create uncertainty as reports claim General Buller crossed the Tugela but lack official confirmation. Boer fortifications and reinforcements press along Methuen’s front while volunteers rush to arms under Lord Chesham and other officers.
Utah witnesses appeared before a house committee in the Roberts case. Dr Luella Miles and Mrs McDougal testified on April 2 1897 about medical society matters and a Mrs Roberts bearing the name Shipp. Cross examination touched on Roberts status and possible prior congressional jurisdiction. Other witnesses described meetings with Roberts on trains and his personal relationships amid political controversy.
John Stevens faced three trials for his life in a superior court and was acquitted on the third for murder. Earlier, he was tried for assault with intent to murder in connection with the death of James Carr. The case, first arising in January 1808, drew wide attention as Stevens, a Black man, killed James Kershew, a white boy, and wounded James Carr. After various trials and appeals, he was ultimately freed on the murder charge, though held on the assault count.
