A House committee hearings open with Mr. Roberts of Utah as witnesses questioned about alleged polygamous relations with Maggie Shipp Roberts. Charles Owen testifies Salt Lake City residents discuss general reputation and links to Brigham Roberts. Roberts objects to testimony but the panel allows it to stand.
General Methuen reports a severe setback at Modder River with heavy British losses. Troops attacked Boer positions with Highlanders and Guards supported by artillery and cavalry, but the enemy held and counterattacked. Wauchope killed in action. Methuen tightens trenches facing 12,000 Boers as stock markets react to the reverse.
Major General Edward Ferrero dies in New York at age eighty eight. Born to Spanish Italian parents, he led the Fifty fourth New York Regiment the Shepard Rifles and commanded a brigade in Burnside’s Roanoke expedition. His death recalls the Petersburg mine controversy and a court inquiry into a failed assault.
The grand jury in Savannah returns indictments against fourteen alleged country merchants for conspiracy to defraud via the U S mails. Named defendants include D A Tyson founder of a long distance telephone company and W Jones M E Hutchinson J H Hutching Reeves and J T Hammond. Others are unnamed as arrests have not been made. The scheme allegedly routed goods through a central member to inflate prices and avoid merchant losses.
