He asks Congress for 250000 to pay 50 rewards per deserter and warns lax punishment risks future evasion, with desertions in the last fiscal year at 14,563. Detroit December 18 eight persons perished in a boarding house fire that swept the building this morning. Three others a woman and two children were hospitalized with poor prospects for recovery. The dead included a man named Wakeu and seven children.

He pleaded not guilty, waived a hearing, and posted a $50,000 bond for appearance before the federal grand jury. An early morning blaze on West College Street severely damaged the upper structure of Mayor J H Sheppard s home.
