In a Superior Court session, multiple African American defendants linked to Magnolia Dell violence and burglary were convicted or received sentences. Luke Ford received ten years for burglary, Nathan Clarke five years for burglary, and several others— King Washington Ben Brown and Ed Turner—got four years for an assault with intent to murder following July shooting.
The grand jury indicted Guerry Adderton for murder in the killing of Charles Mize in Americas. Adderton remains in Sheriff Bell custody awaiting trial date with possible immediate proceedings. The case centers on a fatal shooting at a house of questionable repute last month and earlier committal proceedings indicated self defense.
After three weeks of work the grand jury will finish all business today and adjourn for the term. Since November 25 it has returned eighty one true bills from about 125 cases, indicting crimes citywide and raiding houses of ill repute and violations of local option laws.
Mrs. 8. H. New som of Decatur Alabama says three years of indigestion water-brash stomach and bowel dyspepsia vanished after using Electric Bitters. Tax Collector Dunn will close his books in ten days as the county taxes loom. The courthouse becomes the center of activity with the criminal docket ready for several notable trials.
Ed Hooks faced a Sumter County jury for a murder committed last year. He shot Amos Jackson in a field after a heated exchange. Jackson, unarmed, fled but was pursued and killed. Defense was led by Col. James R. Williams, with Solicitor-General Hooper prosecuting. Jury found Hooks guilty with a recommendation for life imprisonment.
A Winchester Indiana resident M M Austin reports his wife was Ul and doctors could not help her but was cured by Dr Kings New Life Pills. The text promotes relief for stomach and liver troubles constipation and sick headache available at Eldridge's drug store.
The cotton market rebounded after a brief dip, with January futures rising a dozen points as prices steadied near eight cents. Buyers in America paid 7 to 8 cents for good cotton, signaling a generally strong market with only temporary depressions anticipated. Also, an advertisement promotes Syrup of Figs as a gentle laxative for children, produced by the California Fig Syrup Co.
