Washington Dec 7 The senate opened executive session with a long debate over confirming Hawaiian commissioners. Senator Hoar led protests against appointing senators to foreign commissions arguing they act under presidential directive and cannot serve as both lawmakers and commissioners. Senators Morgan Pratt and others defended the practice amid constitutional questions and impeached the method as dangerous.
Forsyth Park crowds witness the Seventh corps review before departure to Cuba. First North Carolina regiment aboard Roumania with Fourth Virginia Second Illinois and 161st Indians form the brigade moving under General Williston. Three Georgia regiments and U.S. artillery units join the march toward Panama as 30,000 spectators observe the ceremony.
In Moxtaowrry Alabama the four statues representing infantry cavalry artillery and navy were unveiled today. Ex Governor Thomas G. Jones Lt Richmond P Hobson ex Secretary Herbert J M Falkner J W A Sanford and Benjamin Screws spoke. Thirteen states were shown by thirteen young ladies and four branches by four young ladies. Jefferson Davis laid the cornerstone sixteen eighty five. The assembly marked a holiday and many visitors arrived by excursion trains.
