A small tornado struck Camilla last night causing an estimated $5,000 in damage. Roofs were torn off, plate glass windows shattered, and business largely suspended today with no injuries reported. Heavy rains afterward harmed crops in Mitchell and nearby counties.
Rev. Luther A. Harrell of Lee Street Methodist Rev. John M Cutler of First Methodist and Rev. A W Quillian returned Tuesday from the South Georgia Methodist Episcopal church conference in Savannah Regular prayer meetings will be held tonight at 7 at both Lee Street and First church No report of the convention is expected until Sunday services The pastors said they had a fine convention and a new determination to devote all their faculties to the coming year They are glad to be back at their charges.
Henry Mathews, a young carrier for the Times-Recorder, suffered a painful finger injury at his Farlow street home when a windblown lattice door slammed shut. The end of his finger was severed, though the wound is not considered serious. he will be unable to deliver papers for several days.
Rome authorities pursue James T. Wright who posed as a state highway department employee at a Broad street store. He bought five bushels of oats for a road gang, passed a $15 check from Charles M. Storey & Sons, took $10 change, and vanished. Chief Harris alerted other cities to watch for him.
Hundreds attended the funeral at the George R. Ellis home on Taylor Street at 11 this morning. Rev. J. A. Smith of Macon led the service with Rev. O. F. Cook and Rev. John M. Cutler assisting. Interment followed in Oak Grove cemetery. Floral offerings came from Georgia and Kentucky. Pallbearers were T. M. Furlow, John Sheffield, A. T. Gates, John W. Shiverick Webb, and Joe M. Bryan.
The Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled the October 2 special election valid, affirming the amendment allowing the legislature to meet without a governor's call. Attorney General Short defended the election board, while former Gov Walton sought to quash indictments, with a December 21 hearing set. Walton’s team planned to go to Washington to appeal a federal ruling on his impeachment case.
President Coolidge will address Congress in a joint session at the Capitol on Thursday afternoon. The exact hour was not announced after a White House meeting with leaders from both houses and the executive branch.
Frederick H. Gillett of Massachusetts was reelected speaker of the House after insurgent Republicans voted for him for the first time since the deadlock began. Macon December 5 The jury in the Dr C A Yarborough case remained deadlocked at noon with no sign of agreement as the Osage City officials reported. J K Alexander a grocer faced assault and battery charges tied to Ollie M Perry flogging as the Klan flare ups prompted fears of gubernatorial troop intervention to quell the violence.
Col John J. Boniface of the 13th Cavalry petitions chancery court in Little Rock to cut his alimony from 250 a month. He argues his 550 monthly salary cannot support his former wife, child, elderly mother, and a large post establishment. Boniface, a World War I era commander, previously divorced for desertion and now serves at Fort D. A. Russell in Wyoming.
Eustie Guttenberger of Macon attended the funeral of Mrs. T. D. Ellis held in town this morning, paying respects to the deceased and joining mourners at the service.
In Alabama on December 4 1923 Mrs Annie Williamson near here was fined fifty dollars for spanking a county school teacher who paddled a son accused of misconduct. The incident involved Miss Cleo Mills and Oma W Coleman with the school district and bank as background.
In Chicago on December 5 a race riot broke out at the Dreamland cafe a Black and Tan venue in the South Side. About 50 to 60 black and white men and women fought using chairs dishes and knives. Several people were beaten unconscious two chauffeurs stabbed. Police arrested six degrees as many white men and two white girls. Indications pointed to a race riot.
Atlanta December 5 The Georgia senate tabled the Mason classification tax measure as part of tax reform. Passage of the calendar opened full discussion of the program favored by Governor Walker and allies. Leaders see the tabling as delaying progress and a first step in a Walker forces attack on the program.
Margaret Gordon, identified as a friend of Morris Diamonds, was arrested in Cleveland Ohio on a charge of issuing a check to defraud related to the Brooklyn bank messenger robbery. She says she dined with Diamonds an hour before his arrest and declined to deposit $9,000 in loot. A downtown store reported she offered a $10 bogus check.
Paris December 5. For the first time since taking office in 1922 Premier Poincare saw the chamber of deputies strike down the absolute majority clause from its electoral reform bill by a vote of 290 to 275. Poincare had supported the measure but did not make it a confidence issue, so the outcome does not signal a loss of government confidence.
Arthur S member of the Odd Lot Dealers pledges to redeem all firm pledges. A. L. Austin of the W. W. Arthur Cotton Co says the Arthur company was not in the New York brokers’ collapse and will settle debts. He notes the firm was an Odd Lot member but not defunct and will protect Sumter investors.
Two NY Cotton Exchange members were summoned to a Wednesday hearing by the business conduct committee over alleged leakage of quotations. The Atlanta and Augusta exchanges were warned they risk losing NY quotation service if leakage persists. Edward T. Bartlett Jr. said members face strict accountability to prevent unauthorized access, underlining that bucket shops rely on controlled quotes.
J Hope Tignor, secretary of the Atlanta Commercial exchange, said the local body is in thorough accord with the New York exchange. The New York action aims to safeguard quotations from all dealers except members of the exchange, ending Atlanta’s practice of allowing Odd Lots exchange members to extend floor privileges to Savannah, Atlanta, and Augusta.
Miss Verna Johnson left today to spend time with Mrs. R. M. Monroe at her Ashburn home where she will receive a number of pretty social attentions during the pre Christmas holidays. She will return home for Christmas festivities.
Paris officials say troops occupying the Ruhr will be concentrated in camps outside cities to ease German irritation while signaling cooperation with the Allied regime. There is no plan to evacuate the Ruhr at present.
On Chipley Main Street Homer G. Irvin shot John McGehee five times in an old feud. McGehee, wounded in the left breast, was rushed to Columbus hospital and listed in serious condition. Irvin allegedly fired a pistol, with five shots reported. only one took effect.
Sparta Dec 5. Truck growers around Sparta have demonstrated that vegetables may be grown here almost until Christmas. They are still selling many varieties and have been selling tomatoes up to a few days ago.
Rome December 5. Mason Hart and Ben Phillips, white convicts, fled the Floyd county convict camp on Black Bluff road Tuesday morning. Both had been sent from Chattooga county for confinement difficulties. Hart served a year of a seven year forgery sentence. Phillips over three years of a 15 year assault to murder sentence.
In Pierre on December 5, presidential slates aligned with Coolidge McAdoo LaFollette. McAdoo topped Ford 39 018 to 5 082 and LaFollette beat Ford in Farmer Labor 31 999 to 7 247 as Johnson and Ford lost support.
President Coolidge will acknowledge the action of the South Dakota Republican proposal convention in granting him preferences for the presidential primary and will send a communication to Republican leaders of the state. White House officials expressed satisfaction with the outcome as they weigh his attitude toward the 1924 election and the Johnson majority.
Sumter Superior Court continued its grind on Wednesday with a full docket of criminal cases from misdemeanors to felonies. Officials expect the fall term to end Thursday or Friday as the grand jury finished its presentments and adjourned Tuesday afternoon.
Americus residents await news as Mrs. H. C. Horton III suffers pneumonia at her home. Her daughters Mrs. I. Odom of Macon and Mrs. Joe Brown of Columbus, and son W. D. Horton of McRae, have rushed to her bedside.
In South Portland a ten month old baby was placed on red hot coals by mother Ethel G Killiksen who said spirits from God called for the sacrifice and that she would soon follow. Neighbors heard screams and rescued the infant. the child severely burned but expected to recover. The mother was to be examined.
