Lincoln Neb Aug 28 The Republican convention may hinge on Governor Savage's Bartley parole row as delegates wrestle whether to address the issue in the gathering. Savage defends the 60 day pardon while critics push for a resolution, shaping the contest for supreme court judges Keyser Sedgwick and Davidson.
Kansas City Aug 28 Near Columbus Missouri forty miles south of here a Black farmer named Boss Francis murdered and injured Miss Maud Henderson at the home of her brother in law W Hyatt on whose farm he worked. Francis fled pursued by posses from Columbus and Warrensburg and will likely face mob violence. The crime occurred in the kitchen while the family was away. the victim began supper before the assault. A posse of about fifty men chased Francis, and Sheriff Koch only learned of the crime at midnight due to limited telegraph facilities. Columbus, in Johnson county, is difficult to access and ignorant of details until telegraph traffic returns. Johnson county remains a rich farming area with dense population, making escape unlikely. The report notes the danger of mob justice and ongoing pursuit.
Birwixanam Alabama August 26 mob white citizens burn Miles Brookes storehouse and dwelling at Thompson Springs near Bessemer after he wrote a note to Mrs Dan Cutliff wife of a white mill man asking her to elope. The couple fled the area. shots were fired into the structures. Nearby Black resident Dan Carson also targeted but escaped harm.
In Bulls Grove Illinois a quarrel among Justin Apple George Smel tz er James Wolgon and Edward Relfe led to a stabbing near Cayuga Lake park. Apple died and Smelten is not expected to live. Apple and Smelszer were attacked with a large pocketknife as witnesses, including two negro women and two white men, were held.
