A Madrid to London dispatch reports heavy fighting between Spaniards and insurgents in Cuba with about 500 killed or wounded on the insurgent side. Madrid later cites General Rios noting fierce fighting on the 8 th with similar losses for insurgents and captured chiefs. A gendarme was executed after a failed uprising, and a royal decree announces the Cortes convening September 5.
Indiana Polis Aug 24 An immense crowd remains in town as the Supreme Lodge continues examining charges of extravagance against active officials. A libel suit in the U S District Court in North Carolina is planned. Support for Judge Carter of California as supreme vice chancellor is reported, with a fallback to oppose Charles E Survery.
Washington Aug 24 Orders issued for mustering out of several regiments including First Vermont First Maine Fifty second Iowa Sixth Pennsylvania Fifteenth Indiana Second New York Second Nebraska One Hundred Fifty seventh Indiana and others. Batteries A and B Georgia light artillery Twenty eighth Indiana light battery plus New York and Pennsylvania cavalry now in Porto Rico. Other orders will follow as decisions are reached. Porto Rican cavalry mustered out include Troops A and C of New York Philadelphia city troops Sheridan troop and Governor's troop of Pennsylvania.

A Hamilton, Ontario dispatch reports a gang of about sixty Italian laborers brought from Buffalo by Grand Trunk authorities to aid double tracking between Hamilton and Burlington. Canadian workers were discharged to make room for the Italians, prompting calls to enforce alien labor laws. MP T. P. MacPherson said no officer is appointed here to enforce the law but provided a letter directing investigation.
In Onarcestox West Virginia on August 24 news came that Mrs Myra Atkinson wife of Governor Atkinson faced forgery charges but the indictment was quashed and the case dismissed Judge Freer notified attorney General Watts that the decision to quash stood and no charges remained against her The report also notes Admiral Schley improving and other brief items from Westrort Dexyne New York and South Amboy units
At Dartex Aug 4 a Democratic state convention at Fair View Casino ended a bitter two day factional fight led by Dowling and Myers. Temporary Chairman Allen Smalley spoke while the platform urged Cuba's independence and a self governing Philippines, endorsing Democratic restraint on war measures and a greenback currency.
W D Clark Nashville Chattanooga and St. Louis agent shot after refusing to send an unpaid telegram. Albert Teague fired at Clark and later killed him when Clark dodged a shot at a window. Teague was arrested. Other items note a peace celebration proposal, a wreck fatally injuring a Knoxville engineer, a wife poisoning in Jersey City, Atlanta mayor on Lafayette monument committee, and U S officials in the Philippine Islands discussing loyalties and future actions.
