Ixptana Pouis Aug 24 The national Democratic party executive committee has practically settled that the temporary chairman will come from the east and the permanent chairman from the south. Bourke Cockran of New York is favored for temporary chair and Donalson Caffery of Indiana for permanent chair. John M Palmer of Illinois will open the convention, which is expected to last two days. Henry Watterson of Kentucky is discussed as a possible president nominee if gold standard Democrats prevail. The hall is being remodeled for the event with an enlarged stage to seat 409 and extra press space ready by week’s end.
A purported midweek report claims Senator Tillman sought to induce Watson to retire from the vice presidential race in exchange for a cabinet post. Watson declined, saying he joined to preserve his party. Similar overtures reportedly may reach Sowall. Watson has lately said he would join the Democratic ticket within two weeks. Delegations gather in Milwaukee for the Republican league clubs convention led by Charles A. Gordon. Professor Atdree returns to Tromso from Dane’s island aboard the Virgo after abandoning his Arctic balloon crossing plan.
Rome Aug 24 Father Sebastiano Martinelli, former prior of the Augustinians, is elevated to archbishop and named second apostolic delegate to the United States by Leo XIII. The commission praises Cardinal Satolli and authorizes Martinelli to carry on the papal representational duties in America, with arrival planned for early September.
A mass meeting at the Roustox courthouse seeks relief for widespread destitution as parishes report 21 white and 4 black families subsisting on bread and water and 68 more seeking aid. Corn and cotton yields will be well under last year’s, with peas potatoes and vegetables also failing, recalling 1849 hardships.
Patt Platt faces pressure to accept or reject a gubernatorial nomination as friends and rivals maneuver. Edward Lauterbach Cornelius Van Cott and Don Bressman Quigg push for Platt while Platt and Senator Fassett weigh the risks of a national party campaign and state expectations.
Columbia Aug 24 reports from the state Weather and Crop Service show extensive cotton damage due to heat and lack of rain across the state. Sea island cotton remains boom ing, while overall acreage this year reaches about 1.9 million acres with projected bale yields around 701,729 to 791,705, depending on conditions through September.
William J. Bryan left Red Hook with Mrs. Bryan and Secretary Cutright to begin the homeward journey to Lincoln. He is in good spirits after a weeklong stay and anticipates solid support from New York Democratic leaders. The party traveled to Rhine Cliff and crossed the river toward Wenneseek Lodge for the night with Mr. Hinkley, while Bryan works on a shorter letter of acceptance to precede McKinley’s.
The Alabama Commercial association plans an October meeting in Binchoonam to decide on placing an Alabama exhibit at the Tennessee Centennial Exposition in Nashville, opening May 1, 1897. Reports praised finances and growth, noting receipts through June 31 184 and a balance of 29059 with expenses 147703 and a gain of 55897.
The Rev. Dr. C O Brown replies to Miss Overman’s confession, calling her latest claim muckmail and alleging she testified falsely for pay. He recalls an offer to procure Mrs. Tennell’s affidavit in his favor in exchange for money and accuses Overman of pressuring others to present her tale.
August 24 reports from Pittsburg and Valencia station describe a Chicago mail train wreck 22 miles from the city with initial tallies of fatalities revised to no outright deaths and 15 to 20 injured. A Fredericksburg and Middleton railway train jumped its track near here with 110 aboard, no fatalities but several injured. W. H. McDool named receiver for the Monon railroad in Indiana, with counsel Field supporting the appointment.
